Job Description Summary
As an Atmospheric Scientist in the Aerospace Carbon Solutions business, you will be critical to helping our airline customers understand and mitigate their carbon dioxide and non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions. This role involves working with teams across GE Aerospace, including the GE Aerospace Research Center, Commercial Engines, and GE Aerospace Software as a Service businesses. You will build state-of-the-art atmospheric models and use them to help airlines better forecast and reduce in-flight emissions. It will also include the opportunity to work on government sponsored, cutting-edge research programs with GE’s external partners in academia and government.Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Build and execute numerical weather prediction models to forecast meteorological parameters at various aircraft flight waypoints.
- Work independently as well as in a team to develop and deliver solutions to assess environmental impacts of aviation industry including CO2, Contrails, and NOx. This will include AI/ML modeling, aircraft plume modeling, simulation, optimization, and advanced data analytics and visualization techniques.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate engine operational data into prediction models.
- Analyze data on environmental trends, advise on compliance with environmental regulations and develop mitigation techniques.
- Contribute to the development of eco-friendly aviation policies.
- Contribute to development and writing of internal and external proposals.
- Clearly and professionally communicate progress and results of your work with the team, business leaders, customers, and technology providers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree accredited college or university
- Minimum of 5 years of Atmospheric Science experience or closely related field
Desired Characteristics
- Ph D in Physics, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, or closely related field.
- 15+ years of experience in Atmospheric Science or closely related field.
- Strong understanding of environmental issues related to aviation.
- Demonstrated experience developing and working with Numerical Weather Prediction models with applications for the Aviation industry.
- Demonstrated development skills and documentation capability in at least one of the following: Java, C/C++/Fortran, Python, R, etc.
- Experience with physics-based contrail models – Co Ci P or APCEMM.
- Familiarity with Atmospheric Science and energy balance in the atmosphere
- Familiarity with global circulation models (GCM).
- Demonstrated capability to rapidly develop and deploy deep learning based image analytics models.
- Demonstrated capability in developing and deploying numerical weather prediction models
- Experience with acquiring, cleaning, and organizing large data using data sciences techniques and multi-core parallel or high-performance computing infrastructures.
- Ability to connect learning from past academic environment to industrial research environment. Strong desire to solve complex, real world problems with ability to develop and validate solutions to narrowly defined technical challenges.
The base pay range for this position is 142,100.00 - 189,500.00 - 237,000.00 USD Annual . The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on September 4th.
