JOB INFORMATION

- Structural Engineering Assistant
Structural Engineering Associate positions review building plans for compliance with building code regulations, ordinances, and the Municipal Code for compliance with fire resistance, life safety, disabled access, and for structural design provisions; provide technical information on the application of regulations to professional architects, engineers, contractors, and to other non-professional applicants; write various project specific technical and administrative reports and correspondence; verify product approval, attend project meetings, and use computer-based project tracking system to enter plan review comments and perform research; review building plans of buildings and structures (e.g., single-family dwellings, apartment buildings, mid-to high-rise buildings, large commercial buildings, and interior modifications of buildings) with moderate to high degree of complexities; and perform other duties as assigned.

Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
2% effective 1/1/25
5% effective 7/1/25 - Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
- Structural Engineering Associate employees with more than one valid State of California registration or special license are eligible for 31% additional pay.
- In addition to the above 31% pay, employees with valid State of California registration as a Professional Structural Engineer are eligible for 10% additional pay.
- Structural Engineering Associate employees who do not have a valid State of California Professional Engineer registration but have a valid Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification that meets the requirements established by California's Department of Consumer Affairs, Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists are eligible for 8% additional pay. The employee's eligibility for EIT certification pay will end when he or she achieves state registration.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
- Bachelor's Degree in Structural, Civil, or Architectural Engineering.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate issued from a state licensing board.
- Registration as a Professional Structural Engineer or Civil Engineer with the State of California.
NOTE:
- Additional qualifying professional structural engineering experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of full-time professional structural engineering experience in structural design or public agency structural plan checking, which MUST include one year of full-time professional journey-level experience at a level equivalent to a Structural Engineering Assistant with the City of San Diego (a position that reviews building plans for moderately complicated structures such as single-family dwellings, duplexes, apartment buildings, small to moderate size commercial buildings, and modifications of interiors of existing commercial buildings).
NOTES:
- The following experience does NOT qualify as professional structural engineering experience: Plan checks of residential one and two-story additions, interior alterations, minor accessory structures, water or sewer structures, and construction inspection.
- A Master's Degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis in structures may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
CERTIFICATE: A valid International Code Council (ICC) Certificate as a Building Plans Examiner will be required within two years from date of hire.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Registration as a Professional Structural Engineer with the State of California.

- For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
