The Opportunity
If you believe you have the academic disposition and discipline to complete a Bachelor of Paramedicine over four years while working for NSW Ambulance full time as a student paramedic, this may be the employment pathway for you.
About the Degree
This is an exciting new opportunity to be part of an innovative pathway delivered in collaboration with existing well established University partners.
If you are a successful applicant for this pathway, your ongoing paid employment with NSW Ambulance will be predicated on expected academic progression across the four years of your University enrolment. There will be a number of units of tertiary study to complete a Bachelor of Paramedicine degree, some of which will be delivered online. NSW Ambulance will assist you achieve these outcomes by providing work-based clinical experience and mentorship. The university paramedicine program will contain a number of learning elements, these can include online lectures, in person lectures and tutorials, assessments and exams and residential schools. The PETP program will support some of these activities within operational hours, however the responsibility to finance, attend and succeed with all activities remains the responsibility of each student
This includes but is not limited to, Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS), enrolment fees, student union fees, travel and accommodation costs associated with residential schools or any course incidentals and materials.
As a condition of on-going employment, you must enter a program and gain the award of a Bachelor of Paramedicine, or equivalent, and be able to gain registration (see link to Board Standards for Registration) as a Paramedic with the Paramedicine Board of Australia.
Essential Requirements for University Admission
Secondary education
ATAR = 80
Domestic applicants with higher education study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have:
Completed prior university study undertaken at university diploma level or above at any Australian University (or Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) equivalent; or
Successful completion of a minimum of 4 (50 credit points) undergraduate units of study. Failures to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis in conjunction with the relevant College.
Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study
To be eligible for an offer, you must have completed a Diploma of Nursing (the approved program of study for enrolled nurses), or a Diploma of Paramedical Science, or a Diploma of Emergency Health Care, or a combined JMED and Diploma of Nursing (ADF).
Please note, this will be a very competitive application process for limited positions, and you will need to demonstrate that you meet both our standard employment requirements and those set by the Universities for admission to a Bachelor of Paramedicine. Please ensure that you are aware of, and can meet the commitments of part time university study and full time employment prior to applying.
If you are initially successful in this pathway, you will be given further information regarding University admission.
If you do not gain and maintain University admission and ongoing enrolment, your employment will not continue.
If you do not meet expected academic progression across each semester, your employment with NSW Ambulance may be reviewed.

  • Submit a current and relevant resume
  • Provide a copy of your driving history from each country, state or territory in which you have held a driver licence. Please note, you will be required to provide evidence of your driver licence at your interview. Those that do not possess a full driver licence at interview, will not progress via this pathway.
  • Respond to the Pre-screening Questions and submit evidence as required including.
  • a copy of your ATAR results, or equivalent
  • Evidence of tertiary studies (at diploma or degree level) or evidence of completing a tertiary preparation course
  • Provide the names of 2 referees – referees must either be a present or recent past supervisor/manager.
  • Address the two targeted questions listed below. This will be reviewed and will count towards your application.

  • You must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible: - Completed High School Certificate with an ATAR of 80 or higher (including adjustment factors) or equivalent. (ATAR score may limit the options of which university can be applied to for enrolment.) - Successful completion of a minimum four (50 credit points) undergraduate units of study for university level subjects (AQF level Associate Degree or higher) demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies. (number of subjects completed may limit the options of which university can be applied to for enrolment) - A completed Tertiary Preparation Course from an Australian University or an accredited provider demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies - Completed a relevant course at university Diploma level or higher at any Australian higher education provider (or an equivalent overseas qualification)
  • Demonstrated willingness and capability to undertake the necessary and relevant education as determined by NSW Ambulance to become a Paramedic and complete a self-funded degree in paramedicine within 4 years from one of the approved partner universities under the Post Employment Tertiary Pathway.
  • Computer literacy and use of web based programs
  • Planning and organising skills to effectively manage your time and prioritise workloads, with the ability to manage stress and maintain performance under pressure without negative impact on yourself or others
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and also to develop professional relationships and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate appropriately with people from a broad range of backgrounds with integrity, empathy and respect for ethical and professional standards including patient confidentiality and sensitivity and ability to abide by the accepted standards of conduct and performance.
  • Applying work health and safety policies to safeguard self and others whilst undertaking the responsibilities of the role.
  • Analytical capability to assess and evaluate a situation and determine appropriate action whilst also accepting responsibility for the impact of that action
