Role Overview:
This position serves as a Project Supervisor for the Highway Maintenance Department responsible for managing the District's roadside maintenance program, including all aspects of vegetation management, erosion control, revegetation, tree risk mitigation, litter abatement, fence, and snow fence maintenance. As well as planning for longterm goals and objectives to make the program successful. Ensure that roadside maintenance activities operate within the policies and procedures of the Department and comply with state and federal laws. Implement quality assurance measures to provide for program success. Reports directly to the District Highway Maintenance Director (HMD).
Roadside Maintenance Management and Planning
Collaborates within Operations on the development and implementation of the Department's Roadside Vegetation Management Program.
Determine the type and quantity of roadside activities to be performed within the district consistent with Work Performance Standards, Program expectations and Work Plans. Reviews work management system data to identify needs for modification of practices and resource utilization.
Develops short and long-range plans regarding roadside management to ensure requirements are met. Participates in regional vegetation/roadside management working groups to ensure the District's maintenance
actions consider, and work synergistically with, local efforts and to increase public awareness of INDOT's efforts.
Coordinate with peers to provide vegetation management training required to maintain District applicator licensure.
Stays abreast of changes in industry standards pertinent to their work and attends appropriate continuing education opportunities to increase professional competency.
Ensures that District maintans the necessary number of licensed pesticide applicators to meet current and future pesticide application needs.
Identifies needs, develops, and delivers training related to vegetation management, including but not limited to revegetation bare/eroded areas, brush control, invasive species, and mowing techniques.
Serve as the District's Adopt A Highway Program Coordination, including coordination with all Districts and Department of Corrections.
Along with peers, provides technical advice and assistance to support INDOT's Public Art and Landscaping
policy, ensuring all landscaping meets requirements and is supported with appropriate maintenance agreements.
Promotes the use of low maintenance, native, vegetation with internal and external customers.
Manage Indiana Hardwood Fund, coordinating with DNR District Foresters to manage selected R/W tracts, develop planting sites, provide project oversight, and manage payments.
In cooperation with the Statewide Roadside Maintenance Specialist, communicates equipment needs, assists in developing specifications for and makes recommendations to the Fleet Directors.
Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $58,000.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
Location:
This position is located in INDOT’s Greenfiled District.
A Day in the Life:
- Plan and/or delegate the short-term daily and weekly work schedules based on priorities and deadlines within established goals and objectives, project planning is normally for one to two years while capital planning is often done for a two - five-year period.
- Manage all maintenance-related and capital improvement activities within assigned facilities and grounds.
- Establish schedules and method for providing facility and maintenance services, identify resource needs and allocate resources accordingly.
- Assign and delegate work to subordinates, spot checking routine work and reviewing more complex or unusual projects.
- Maintain operational systems for monitoring and tracking work orders, preventative maintenance logs, safety reports, etc.
- Ensure all federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and standard trade practices related to quality standards are adhered to during the course of work activities; Make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards, policies and procedures.
- Regularly inspect property for safety and security concerns and ensure staff correctly wears and uses safety equipment and investigates accidents.
- Forecast and prepare maintenance operating budgets, ensures compliance with established budgetary parameters.
- Order, prepare specifications, and purchase supplies, equipment and contract work according to required purchasing and bidding procedures.
- Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
- Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
Traffic Maintenance
- Direct and manage all Traffic field operations, ensuring all activities are planned, coordinated, and complete in the safest and most efficient manner possible.
- Establish operating plan to ensure cost effective application of staff and material.
- Assist in formulating district traffic short and long term goals.
What You'll Need for Success:
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE).
- Five (5) years’ experience in maintenance, construction, or related experience; Minimum two (2) years’ experience supervisory experience in these areas.
- Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
- Advanced knowledge of variety of trades related to installation, inspection, repair and maintenance of electrical, plumbing, and other related systems in all facility locations.
- Advanced knowledge of the tools, methods, practices, materials, and equipment used in the building and mechanical trades.
- Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safe performance of assigned duties.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to understand and interpret detailed plans and specifications.
- Ability to make long-range plans, schedule preventative maintenance, and seasonal maintenance as well as prioritize routine and emergency repairs.
- Estimate repair and construction project costs.
- Ability to lead a multi-discipline team both as supervisor and in a technical capacity.
- Interpret and explain pertinent department policies and procedures.
- Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
- Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
