RTÉ News and Current Affairs has a vacancy for the position of Deputy Editor, assignment to Upfront with Katie Hannon.
Upfront delivers a one-hour current affairs programme (Upfront with Katie Hannon) to the TV schedule each week as well as extra coverage of special events. It also provides a weekly podcast (Upfront: The Podcast) as well as weekly written articles (Upfront: The conversation) and other weekly social content (both bespoke and repurposed).
Reporting to the Editor, the Deputy Editor will support the preparation and production of all scheduled and special Upfront content. While live on-air for Upfront with Katie Hannon, their central role is to guard programme output for any legal or editorial issues and establish as quickly as possible the facts to relay to the Editor. They will also be responsible for writing any newslines from the live programme and feeding into inews during or directly after broadcast.
Other responsibilities include:
- Providing editorial and production support on all programming and online content.
- Taking a leadership role in outputting programmes from time to time and take responsibility for the content in conjunction with the Editor.
- Working to enhance the output of Upfront whilst ensuring all legal and journalistic guidelines are considered and adhered to.
- Helping to manage output across all relevant platforms
- Working very closely with panel contributors to ensure they’re fully appraised on all aspects of TV programme including the research and producing of topic briefs

The successful candidate will be an experienced programme maker with excellent editorial judgement and journalism skills. They will have a proven track record in originating and delivering strong stories of public interest and have an in-depth knowledge of news and current affairs.
Candidates will also possess: - Strong visual skills and a keen eye for graphic content to facilitate the enhancement of the programming values and social media output across Upfronts’ content
- Experience of working to tight deadlines
- Good interpersonal skills together with the ability to lead and motivate a team
- Excellent scripting ability, to include inews stories and weekly promos
The position will be offered on an initial 12 month fixed-term contract basis at the level of Manager Grade 2. The salary scale is €71,532 to €100,334 gross per annum.
