Remuneration: €52,715 (point 1 on SFI experienced post-doctoral researcher salary scale)

About Our Research
RCSI recognises that excellence in research is critical to the quality of its educational activities, its credibility, and, overall, to its mission to enhance human health. RCSI’s research strategy aims to build upon its strength in translational biomedical and clinical research to deliver transformational, high impact changes in health care. Targeting both Irish national and EU funding, along with increased collaboration with industry, is a major part of the RCSI research strategy. Summary of Post
This Senior Postdoctoral fellow will work directly with the the PI, Prof. Helena Kelly, on progressing and expanding designated research projects focused on the development of novel drug delivery platforms. This role will include responsibilities relating to managing day to day activities of existing research grants and generating new research funding, and translating outputs for academic publication, intellectual property and commercialisation. The role will also include supervision of postgraduate students, and some teaching activities with both postgraduate and undergraduate students. The research group has a translational focus, with an emphasis on commercialisation and working with clinical collaborators to enable translation to the clinic.
The role will require you to work closely in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including national and international collaborators, industry partners, the ORI and TTOs, grant funding bodies, VCs and angel investors and CROs/CMOs. Additionally, as there is a strong translational focus, the role will also involve oversight and delivery of commercial activities, including undertaking market analysis and engaging with Key Opinion Leaders (KOL’s) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in the field, as well as procurement activities.
Specifically, the duties of the post are:
  • Manage day to day activities in the research group including monitoring of progress of research activities of the group
  • Drafting and preparation of reports for internal and external stakeholders including funding agencies.
  • Develop and submit new funding applications building on existing research projects and IP, as well as developing new ideas/approaches
  • Liaise with collaborators and industry partners funded by relevant agencies for purposes of collating, interpreting, reporting findings
  • Generate original peer-reviewed publications
  • Ensure in vivo work is in compliance with animal ethics requirements
  • Identify opportunities for IP
  • Supporting the wider research team with activities such as experimental design, statistical analysis and troubleshooting
  • Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Delivery of teaching activities related to area of SME
  • Complying with statutory legislation, RCSI and department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
  • Representing the best interests of the department and RCSI at all times
Qualifications – (Essential):
  • Ph D degree in field of pharmaceutics/formulation science, materials science, drug delivery, chemical/biomedical engineering, or a related field
Knowledge & Experience:
Specific skills that would enhance suitability include:
  • Expertise in hydrogels, nanoparticles/nanomaterials preparation and characterization.
  • Expertise with in vitro evaluation of hydrogel and nanoparticulate systems including cell culture (primary and cell line), imaging, flow cytometry and bioanalytical assays
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with evidence of strong scientific writing through publications
  • Evidence of strong collaborative skills and ability to work effectively with external stakeholders
  • Proven management skills and ability to plan, coach and motivate a research team
  • Attention to detail, thoroughness in work practices, and be able to demonstrate outstanding record keeping.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and operate with flexibility in a busy and productive lab
K****nowledge & Experience (Desirable):
  • Experience in 3D models for material evaluation
  • Experience/interest in minimally invasive medical devices and/or loco-regional/site-specific delivery systems
  • Interest in translational research/commercialization and process development
