Rabobank
Agriculture and biodiversity analyst - RaboResearch
Utrecht
FULL TIME
August 17, 2024
Do you want to make an impact by helping to create a more sustainable food system?
You and your job
As an agriculture and biodiversity analyst, you know all about different farming systems, practices and processes. You understand how these vary locally and how they differentially impact nature at local, regional, and global scales. Vice-versa – from a double materiality perspective – you can assess how biodiversity loss and loss of ecosystem services impact farming systems. You will apply a systems thinking approach to create and analyze novel data and information and provide insights for our clients and internal stakeholders in the bank to make well-informed, science-based decisions. Assessing the environmental impacts of agriculture (and our Food & Agribusiness (F&A) clients) throughout the value chain, and finding solutions to mitigate such impacts in line with Rabobank’s Nature Vision, will be key in this position.
Inspirational practical examples
- Develop a metrics framework that will help clients and the bank understand their impacts and dependencies on nature/biodiversity at the farm-, and at the broader value chain level. Use your knowledge and expertise to collaborate with GIS analysts, sector specialists, legal experts, policy advisors, and others in the bank on a wide range of projects.
- Present your work to clients, and internal and external stakeholders and represent Rabobank at external events and working groups.
‘I really enjoy translating complex (scientific) ideas into actionable insights for our clients and the bank to make our food system more sustainable. This job gives me the freedom to develop and discuss these ideas in a multidisciplinary team.’ – Frank Groenewoud, biodiversity researcher in Food Systems Research, Rabo Research.
The big picture
Growing enough food to feed 10 billion people in 2050 in a just and sustainable way is perhaps the key challenge of the 21st century. Rabobank aims to play its role in shaping this sustainable food future by engaging with clients and other stakeholders in the food system. That’s where you come in, providing important insights that are needed to help our clients to produce food and agri commodities in a way that respects ecological boundaries, complies with international targets and regulations, and promotes global food security. You will play a key part in developing a framework that will enable us to measure biodiversity impacts (both positive and negative) on our clients at farm-level. This is how you share your talent for 36 hours a week as an agriculture and biodiversity analyst at Rabobank.
We achieve more together than alone
We believe in the power of difference and cooperation. Bringing together people's unique knowledge and perspectives as well as differences is what makes us an even better bank. So we are very curious about what you can bring to our team at Food Systems Research at Rabo Research.
‘ It is a privilege to work with a team of colleagues with such a broad and diverse set of expertise, backgrounds and skills, collaborating to deliver insights to support clients and the bank in growing a better, more sustainable, world together. Will you join us to help answering nature-related questions, challenges and opportunities?’ – Marjan van Riel, head Food Systems Research within Rabo Research Food & Agribusiness.
Your colleagues in Food Systems Research and Rabo Research can't wait to meet you. Now it's your turn to make them stronger in bringing the nature / biodiversity perspective to the table and connecting the dots strategically but also practically with other environmental as well as social criteria, as well as the economic (business case) angle to optimize the 'risk-return-sustainability' triangle. Working together is the way we work; as one creative and energetic team at Rabobank. Speaking of Rabobank: we are a Dutch bank that operates in 38 countries for over 9,500,000 customers. Together with these customers, our members and partners we stand side by side to create a world in which everyone has access to enough healthy food. In the Netherlands, we work to create a country in which people are happy with how they live, work and do business.
You and your talent
- A master’s degree or Ph D in agricultural/environmental science, or related field and at least 5 years of relevant work experience
- Understanding of farming systems and their complex relationships to biodiversity at different scales is a must, where broader food systems knowledge (from farm inputs to consumption) is a big advantage.
- Experience with environmental/ecological research and (global) biodiversity datasets.
- Some affinity with geospatial data analysis and programming skills (Python/R) is a plus.
- Knowledge on global biodiversity policy (i.e. Global Biodiversity Framework), corporate reporting standards (e.g. ESRS) and other guidance frameworks (SBTN) would be an asset.
- Strong writing and presentation skills to communicate information to clients and stakeholders (internal and external).
- Ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team with different cultural backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal skills to maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Fluent in English in both writing and speaking. Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) Dutch would be an asset.
This is what we offer you
- up to €5,800 (scale 9) or up to €6,900 (scale 10) gross per month
- Additionally: thirteenth month’s salary, 8% holiday allowance and an extra budget of 10% of your gross salary to be used at your discretion (salary, pension, holiday hours, …) A personal development budget to use every calendar year
