WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We're looking for an Assistant General Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance, EMEA to join the OGC - EMEA Legal team based at Nike's European Headquarters in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
This regional role is crucial for the success of the Global Product Safety & Compliance program enabling Nike, Inc. to safeguard its consumers, athletes* and employees, ensure uninterrupted access to the markets in which it operates, protect its Brand, adhere to environmental protection, and meet its regulatory obligations and the essential legal requirements as it strives to grow in regions assigned by the Global Sr. Director/Sr. Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance.
WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON?
- Ensuring uninterrupted EMEA market access for Nike, Inc. product
- Advise, assist, and provide guidance to the enterprise, in particular: Supply Chain, Express Lane, and Global Sustainability, Global and EMEA Communications, Demand and Supply Management , Market Compliance & Packaging Ops, Procurement, and Chem COE on regional issues.
- Issue and inquiry management with regulators, local authorities, regional customer requests, and restricted market access in EMEA
- Advise on the strategy, approach, and respond to consumer injury claims in EMEA region
- Educate, aid and advise on product certification and product compliance requirements in EMEA region
- Educate, aid and advise on Nike, Inc.'s RSL Program and chemical safety in EMEA region
- Help review internal Nike design and product standards via regional lens
- Monitor emerging and existing legislation in the EMEA region and contribute to the global tracking framework inpartnership with Government & Public Affairs (GPA)
- Work with GPA (Government & Public Affairs) team and relevant stakeholders to develop Nike positions on, and strategies to influence development of, regional product legislation and regulations; develop supporting technical/legal position papers
- Contribute regional perspectives on product concepts and designs from a safety and compliance lens
- Advise and consent on internal compliance issues in consultation with the Global Sr Director/Sr Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance
- Contribute a regional perspective in reviews of inline products & promotional merchandise to ensure safety and compliance to protect the Brand
- Research, advise and provide regional perspective on labeling issues, green claims and product benefit claims
- Coordinate with Global Sr Director/Sr Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance, on regional and global corrective actions (e.g., recalls)
- Manage product related litigation and outside counsel
- Develop training materials for brand and marketing teams in the region
- Aid and assist Global Sr Director/Sr Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance, on delivering regional insights into a strategic narrative around sustainability to support Nike's "Purpose" strategy
- Contribute regional perspective to strategic plans and budgets.
- Report on product compliance issues and activities to senior management in the EMEA region and to the Global Sr Director/Sr Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance
- Serve on regional standards committees and industry associations
- Represent Nike at key professional organizations in region
- Be an active member of the Global/Virtual Team Product Safety & Compliance Network
WHO WILL YOU WORK WITH?
You will work with teammates across the EHQ and Global Legal team and the broader OGC team including GPA, Market Compliance & Packaging Ops, Licensing, NDE & Technology, and other internal business partners including Supply Chain, Express Lane, and Global Sustainability, Global and EMEA Communications, Demand and Supply Management , Market Compliance & Packaging Ops, Procurement, and Chem COE (Chemistry Center of Excellence), Risk Finance/Claims, Design & Development, Brand Creative and Marketing.
You will also work with external partners including the European Federation of Sporting Goods Industry (FESI), the World Federation of Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) and managing outside suppliers and vendors, including outside legal counsel.

You will be reporting to the Global Sr Director/Sr Counsel, Product Safety & Compliance who is based at Nike's World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, USA.
Qualifications
WHAT YOU BRING TO NIKE
- Bachelor's/Master's degree besides Juris Doctor, U.K. Legal Practice Course, or equivalent foreign law degree
- Qualified lawyer in a European jurisdiction
- Experience exclusively in international products law (product liability, product litigation, product/chemical/environmental safety, and product compliance) covering a variety of countries in Europe incorporate and/or private practice setting with emphasis on following specialty areas: dispute resolution, litigation, administrative proceedings, compliance issues, and negotiation of executive level contracts
- Experience in advising to Senior executive leadership.
- Fluent in spoken and written English. Additional languages a plus
- Experience in assisting with developing company product compliance strategies and positions to influence development of regional legislation and regulations
- Crisis management experience and capability, especially in relation to product recalls and product compliance challenges/inquiries from market surveillance authorities
- High degree & demonstrable collaborative capacity
- Expertise in product safety, product compliance, product litigation, product liability, basic chemistry
- Experience using formal product risk assessment tools
- Cross-cultural work experience:
- Experienced and comfortable with in-person presentations/trainings to audiences at all levels
- Experience and/or training in cross-cultural communications
- Experience and desire to advise/coordinate a virtual team of product compliance professionals working in disparate areas throughout the organization
- Informative and persuasive in routine and ad hoc communications
- Experience in (internal) client management and networking
- Project management experience, capability
- Proficient with standard desktop tools including MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), Slack, Box, Workvivo, and Workday.
- Willing to relocate to Hilversum, Netherlands
