PhD Candidate: Optimizing high-density crop cultivation
Venlo
FULL TIME
November 5, 2024
Job Description
The success of plant cultivation is the product of genetics, the environmental conditions and growth management. Optimized crop production is especially important when efficient use of space and energy is required such is the case of indoor crops. This research project aims to identify the genetic bottlenecks of efficiency gain of indoor lettuce production in horizontal and vertical hydroculture systems. Plant growth responses to different environmental conditions will be tested in high-tech climate rooms and related to the genetic composition of the tested lettuce varieties. Based on the observations, the role of specific genes will be tested, either through mutagenesis, or through crosses between lettuce varieties with identified traits.
This research will be caried out in collaboration with a vegetable seed company and requires communications skills to optimize the information exchange. The practical work will include growing and accurate phenotyping of lettuce varieties and mutants in climate rooms and greenhouse. Another major part is molecular laboratory work to identify genes involved in traits, and to characterization their function in the observed plant responses.
As a Ph D candidate you will:
- carry out independent research, supported by your supervisors from Envirogenetics, Plant Functional Genomics and the breeder of the collaborating vegetable seed company
- help with general tasks of the BFFI and participate in education provided by the institute
- be co-responsible for optimal communication with the involved seed company.
- write publications based on your scientific work, culminating in a Ph D thesis.
Specifically, you will work at the interface of plant physiology, molecular biology and genetics. You will phenotype plants, study gene expression and gene function in relation to the traits that are relevant for breeding.
Were are you going to work?
The research is a joint project of Envirogenetics led by Prof Dr Jan van den Berg and Plant Functional Genomics led by Prof Dr Wim Vriezen, and you will work with specialists in lettuce breeding from the involved seed company. The research groups are part of the Brightlands Future Farming Institute (BFFI) of the Faculty of Science and Engineering from the University of Maastricht (UM) (https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/research/brightlands-future-farming-institute) located at the Campus Greenport Venlo. For clarity, the location where the study is being conducted is at the BFFI in Venlo.
