We are looking for an expert in Life Cycle Assessment to evaluate the climate footprint of Maastricht University

Job Description
Project information

Maastricht University (UM) is committed to advancing a sustainable world through its research, and education, and by exemplifying sustainability in its operations. With a vision to embed sustainability into the core of its organization by 2030, UM has launched the Sustainable UM2030 program. This initiative brings together researchers, educators, faculty representatives, policymakers, and students through the UM Green Office to drive meaningful change. For the 2021-2026 period, UM has outlined a strategic framework to maximize its impact on building a sustainable future.

Understanding carbon footprints is essential for effective climate action across all organizations, especially large institutions like universities. In this effort, Maastricht University has launched a project to assess its climate impact, both current and projected. The project will be led by the Sustainability of Chemicals and Materials research group from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, a team with extensive expertise and research infrastructure in life cycle assessment. This team is part of the Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus, one of the largest chemical and materials communities in Europe. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Sustainable UM2030 and other university departments, reinforcing Maastricht University’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will:

  • Develop, perform, and validate advanced environmental LCA studies for project-specific targets.
  • Develop the Life Cycle Inventory for the LCA studies through data collection with university and external partners, collection of information in literature resources and databases, and extracting data from other sources, such as process modelling in ASPEN.
  • Work with a scientific project team and university partners to develop and discuss research problems.
  • Present your work at international conferences.
  • Write scientific papers for international peer-reviewed conferences and journals.
  • Provide teaching assistance and/or supervision within undergraduate and master’s projects and programs.

The postdoctoral researcher will work at the Sustainability of Chemicals and Materials Group of the Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus. You will become part of a vibrant multidisciplinary research group, specialized in the life cycle sustainability assessment of (emerging) biobased and circular chemical value chains. The postdoctoral research will be performed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Yvonne van der Meer.

Requirements
  • A highly motivated candidate
  • A Ph D degree in a pertinent field such as industrial ecology, sustainable buildings, or sustainable engineering.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in LCA of complex systems with a proven track record of authoring high-quality scientific papers.
  • Experience with organizational footprint calculations is considered advantageous.
  • Willingness to collaborate in an efficient working style, and strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English.
