Location: Tilburg
Contract Size: 0.8 - 1.0 FTE (32-40 hours per week).
Full-time gross monthly salary: € 5,441 – € 6,986
Contract duration: 18 months with a prospect of a permanent contract
Desired starting date: February 2025

Will you be our next Associate Professor who can contribute to research and teaching in the domain of Energy Law and Digital Technologies? Are you fascinated by the challenges of climate change, the energy transition, the evolution of energy markets, and the role of technology? Do you like working in a team and want to make an impact with your research? This is your chance!
TILT invites applications in the field of Energy Law. You will primarily work on topics related to the impact of digital technologies in the energy sector. The position involves both research and teaching, with the opportunity to collaborate on existing energy projects and develop new ones. Your expertise and capacity enable you to develop top-notch research in the following areas: Dutch energy law and policy, the intersection of energy law with climate/environmental law, the impact of digital technologies on the law and regulation of energy markets, as well as the role of technology in regulation more broadly, with a distinct focus on Dutch policy developments.

Your position
The candidate will develop and grow in education as well as in research, both individually and as part of a team of ambitious scholars.

The candidate must have expertise in Dutch energy law and policy. The research of the candidate will be linked to the TILT Signature Research Plan: Regulating Socio-Technical Change. This is a forward-looking research program that seeks to shape the Department’s agenda for research and policy at the intersection of law, regulation, and technology. The candidate will have experience in the actual and potential role of digital technologies in the field of energy as well as the impact of technology on law and regulation more generally.

The candidate is expected to develop original, fundamental research as well as engage in policy-relevant research. The candidate is also expected to collaborate in and develop research projects in collaboration with others at TILT working on data justice and AI governance as well as with other research centers at the University, like the Academic Workspace on Climate and Energy and the Constitutionalizing in the Anthropocene project at Tilburg Law School.

The candidate will also contribute to research on commissioned projects, take the initiative to write tenders to acquire new research projects, and conduct research for various studies. (S)he will work in close collaboration with the rest of the staff in preparing activities and events, including initiatives for professional learning.

TILT offers a Master Program in Law & Technology and contributes to several other Master`s and Bachelor`s programs. The candidate will contribute to teaching courses that TILT is involved in and will be supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis students and may be asked to assist in the supervision of Ph D projects. The candidate will also take the lead or contribute to professional education in the fields of their expertise. Such professional education will be provided in both Dutch and English. The intended ratio between teaching and research is roughly 40%-50%, with the remaining 10% for administrative duties.

Your profile
Tilburg University is curious about how you can contribute to our research, education, impact, and to the team you will be part of. Therefore, we would like to get the best possible picture of your knowledge, insight, skills, and personality. As such, we seek candidates with the following qualifications:
  • Have a Ph D in Law (or have their manuscript approved and a defense date planned);
  • Have a very good understanding of Dutch and EU energy law and policy;
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in developing research and education activities in the field of Dutch energy law and policy, but also in the broader field of EU internal market law;
  • Have publications commensurate with the stage of the candidate’s career, indicative of the ability to publish in leading academic journals in Dutch and English;
  • Be willing to apply for external research funding and participate or take the lead in applications for projects, at the national and European level (existing experience will be considered as an advantage);
  • Have demonstrable teaching experience and fine didactic skills;
  • Have a University Teaching Qualification (in Dutch: BKO), or be prepared to acquire this within the first two years of employment;
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in Dutch and English (level C1);
  • You are flexible and adaptable to adjust your research focus in light of legal and technological developments;

  • Show scientific integrity and contribute to an open and diversified academic culture;
  • Be committed to being an active member of our team and the department, and to integrate into the environment provided by the department and the Law School;
  • You demonstrate personal leadership: you take responsibility for your work and career and possess a good level of self-knowledge;
  • Tilburg University provides in-person and hybrid education. The starting point is that all employees perform their work in the Netherlands. This means, among other things, that new employees are expected to move to the Netherlands before the start of their employment.
