The Bachelor Textile & Fashion Design (T&F) of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) is, looking for year 1 to 4, for a new Tutor Knitting (0.1965 FTE).

What will you do?

You’ll teach and guide textile and fashion students from year 1 to 4. In year 1 you introduce all students, both textile and fashion, to the basic skills of knitting on a flatbed knitting machine, supplemented with the basic techniques of hand knitting and crochet.
In the following years, knitting is an integral and important part of the textile program. Students will further develop their skills and knowledge closely related to their personal design projects. In fashion, knitting isn’t a fixed part of the program, but we do offer students more and more opportunities to specialize in it.
It will be your role to guide students to develop a wide range of technical skills and material knowledge. You will educate them how to translate these into a unique 2-D or 3-Dimensional fashion or textile related expression that comes from a personal fascination, and fits within their design process. This all contributes to developing a personal design signature. You will also connect students to the professional field by e.g. visiting the industry, like Cousy B.V. in Belgium, and collaborations with partners like the Textile Museum in Tilburg.

Your profile

• You are a designer active in the (international) field with a broad knowledge of knitting techniques and material development;
• Through your experience in the field, and preferably also in education, you can develop a sustainable vision together with the rest of the team and the Textile workshop to give new impulses to education in the field of knitting;
• You have broad and up-to-date knowledge of various knitting techniques, in particular working with flatbed knitting machines;
• You have broad knowledge of the latest developments in the field of materials and applications of knitting in both fashion and textile design;
• You can develop, implement and supervise a program that teaches technical skills and knowledge, which is fueled by socially relevant issues and concepts to enable students to initiate and execute a relevant design process;
• With your knowledge and network, you can motivate students, help them on their way and connect them to the world outside;
• You are familiar with art education and have the sensitivity to recognize someone's authentic talent and guide its development;
• You have good communication skills in English conversation;
• You are eligible to work in the Netherlands under an employment contract.

The Bachelor Textile & Fashion Design offers a four-year English taught program in which we want to focus on developing new perspectives in the field of textile and fashion design. We find ourselves in a rapidly changing society and we want our students to play a conscious role in it. Research and experiment, both in theory and in shape and material, are essential to stimulate and develop a current and innovative personal vision. We will
speak to the possibilities and ambition of positioning textile and fashion in one department, by expanding on the particularities of each to develop them equally towards a sustainable future perspective.

What we offer you

You will teach one day a week for 34 weeks a year. A flexible schedule of teaching hours may sometimes be necessary. We aim to have the contract start on November 1, 2024. The contract is temporary for this academic year 24-25 until September 1, 2025 and can be renewed in case of mutual satisfaction.
The salary is between min. € 4,361.31 and max. € 6,114.87 gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale 11), depending on education and work experience. The Cao-Hbo has a generous leave scheme, 8% vacation allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. You can also participate in a health insurance and/or a disability insurance on favorable conditions.
