Assistant Curator Matauranga Maori - Fixed Term, part time (32 hours per week)
Wellington
November 25, 2024
Te Papa stands proud as an iconic national building housing the treasures of the nation and is a vibrant destination for both national and international visitors. Biculturalism is a founding philosophy and practice of Te Papa designed to explore the contribution of Maori language and culture to the life, culture and activities of the museum in small and large ways. Te Papa fosters and nurtures cross-cultural capability, the ability of people of different cultural backgrounds to interact with one another in positive and uplifting ways.
The Matauranga Maori team is seeking interest for the position of Assistant Curator Matauranga Maori for a fixed-term period until the end of April 2025, part time (32 hours per week). This is an entry level curatorial position that will see you supporting a team of curators in areas such as taonga Maori research, exhibitions, publications, collection development and programmes. A specific focus for this fixed term position will be to gain an understanding of curation of taonga Maori in preparation for exhibitions.
To be considered for this opportunity you will have a degree or qualification relevant to matauranga Maori and museum practice, understand Maori research methodologies and have a passion in matauranga Maori and its application and contribution to museum practice. You will have the opportunity to participate in concept development, interpretation, and representation of this in the context of Te Papa's visitor experience.
We are seeking candidates that can demonstrate:
- An interest in curatorial practices and museum ethics and principles
- Ability to work effectively with iwi, hapu and whanau, academic and cultural organisations.
- Some experience working on exhibitions and/or writing about taonga Maori in a museum environment
Offers will be made within the range to reflect the skills and experience offered by the candidate and those required of the role, and internal relativities with other employees.
Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.
Prior to Te Papa confirming any offer of employment, pre-employment checks will be undertaken including criminal conviction history and reference checking as a minimum.
For more information or a confidential discussion, please contact Migoto Eria, Head of Matauranga Maori on 021 401 902 or email Migoto.Eria@tepapa.govt.nz.
Applications close on 9 December
