The Data & Analytics Engineering community at ASB takes care of data warehousing environments, extracts data from source systems, loads it into our data lake, and transforms it into a format that helps our organisation make insightful business decisions. The community has several squads, made up of Business Intelligence Engineers, Analytics Aficionados, Transformative Data Modellers, Cloud Data Dabblers, and SQL Magicians.
Mō te Tūranga | About the role
In this role, you will be responsible for contributing to the design, delivery, and operation of world-class data solutions. You will help your autonomous squad drive uplift in the data capability at ASB by contributing to the planning, implementation, and support of on-premises and increasingly cloud-based solutions that are fit for the future. Being a financial institution, there is a strong emphasis on information security.
Main tools we use in the cloud are dbt, Snowflake and Strem Sets, and MS-SQL Server and Wherescape RED on premises. Workflow orchestration, CI/CD, and uplifting operational support and observability are some of the future growth areas and experience in these would beneficial.
Note that this is not a report writer/designer role. We have a large analyst community who are experts in reporting tools such as Power BI and data querying. This role is about making data products available to analysts and report writers.
The role is internally referred to as Business Intelligence Specialist.
Some of the skills required for the role are:
You will bring to the role 5 or more years of experience within a data-savvy organisation and are familiar with working in an Agile environment. You enjoy working within a team environment and can build and maintain effective relationships across a diverse range of customer and stakeholder groups.
Technically, you will have strong SQL skills and in-depth knowledge in data warehousing, including Kimball. Experience with both on-prem and cloud-based tools such as Snowflake, dbt, and Streamsets, is crucial. Experience with MS SQL Server and Wherescape RED is a bonus.

- Designing, building, and operating complex ETL/ELT processes, dimensional models, and other data solutions.
- Converting stakeholder requirements into functional, implementable solutions.
- Maintaining high standards of development quality, data management processes, and risk control in data solutions.
- Identifying and implementing automation and simplification solutions on new and existing environments to increase efficiency and reliability.
- Emphasizing the use of cloud tools, particularly dbt and Snowflake, to design new patterns and solutions.
