We are looking for a Fire Engineer or a Senior Fire Engineer to assist the Council in its capacity as a Building Consenting Authority and Territorial Authority.
About the role | Ko te mahi nei
Our Fire Engineers provide professional technical advice and guidance for all issues related to fire engineering and compliance related matters. Advice may relate to Building Consent applications, LIM's, Warrants of Fitness, or general matters. We build strong relationships across applicants, industry professionals and colleagues to ensure we are getting the best outcomes for projects and the community.
Our Senior Fire Engineers also contribute to the growth and mentoring of other engineering and building officials, ensuring the team is empowered and motivated to achieve organisational goals. They also lead continuous improvement projects that enhance and maintain our high performance standards within the unit, contributing to developing or refining policies and procedures.
About you | Ko Koe Tēnei
In both of these roles you need to have excellent communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to provide clear technical guidance and advice, ensuring it is being received correctly. You will need to have comprehensive understanding of the relevant legislation and be able to use your problem solving skills to find workable solutions to untested situations.
As a Fire Engineer you will have:
- Post graduate degree qualification in fire engineering, or equivalent, with significant fire engineering experience
- New Zealand Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) in Fire Engineering.
- At least 10 years' experience in the building industry preferably in a wide variety of New Zealand building projects.
- Post graduate degree qualification in fire engineering, or equivalent, with significant fire engineering experience
- New Zealand Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) in Fire Engineering.
- 15-20 years in fire design and construction supervision, with at least 8 years in a large organisation.
- Experience in offering coaching and mentoring to other staff, either formally or informally

Hours of work - 37.5 - 40 hours per week
Position - Permanent
Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
Salary - Salaries are negotiable and based on a 40 hour working week per annum. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
Fire Engineer - $111,553 - $123,948 per annum
Senior Fire Engineer - $121, 946 - $135,496 per annum
