IT Operations & Support Manager - NIWA

NIWA (National Institute of Water & Atmospheric) is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve the safety and wellbeing of all New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science. NIWA's in-house IT team develops, maintains, operates, and supports an extensive and diverse mix of business and scientific systems; work that is both important and interesting.
What we are looking for
We are seeking an experienced IT Operations & Support Manager with strong leadership and soft skills, with a technical background in operational IT. Experience managing both on-premises and cloud systems with a strong technical background or experience in the research sector.
You will be joining our highly skilled and experienced country wide IT Management Team, and the role is based in Wellington. The role leads a team of Administrators, Engineers, Support staff and IT professionals who deliver solutions enabling the future of environmental research for all New Zealanders.
You will be involved with the management and support of NIWA's infrastructure and systems throughout New Zealand, including the systems on our two science vessels, ensuring a robust, resilient, and secure information technology environment is maintained.
What you will bring

Strong management experience

Change control and process management skills

Understanding of modern practices such as CI/CD, automation, infrastructure as code

Operational incident management

Operational Cyber Security fundamentals

Ability to mentor staff through their careers

Strong technical background Information Technology systems and operations

Ability to fit into an established team of talented management staff

A team player with a good sense of humour and a "Can do" attitude and able to effectively communicate with a wide range of people.
