Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented academic to join our Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic environment where your contributions will have a lasting impact on students' academic and career success. As a Lecturer specializing in Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), Career Development Learning (CDL), or a related discipline, you will bring expertise in pedagogical approaches that foster student success through real-world, practical learning experiences. You will collaborate closely with the Academic Lead for the Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) Programme, the WIL team and UC Careers, ensuring that WIL and CDL are central to the student learning journey. This includes creating opportunities for students to build career identities and professional competencies through engagement with authentic work experiences.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Teaching: Co-design and deliver research-informed courses within the PACE programme, using innovative, inspirational pedagogical methods that empower students to connect theory with practice.
  • Student-Centric Engagement: Provide proactive pastoral care and student support, helping to build career confidence and competence.
  • Service and Collaboration: Support UC's strategic objectives, engage in professional development, and actively contribute to university initiatives that advance WIL and CDL.
  • Relationship Building: Cultivate meaningful relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty members, community partners, and industry representatives.
Mōu | Who You Are
We are looking for an individual with:

  • A Ph D (or equivalent) in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of experience and qualifications.
  • A proven track record in teaching, with a student-centred approach that supports a diverse range of learners.
  • Experience in designing and delivering curriculum in WIL, CDL, or related disciplines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster collaboration and build strong relationships.
  • A commitment to upholding cultural values, including te reo Māori and tikanga Māori, with competency in te reo Māori being an advantage.
Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With
The Professional and Community Engagement (PACE) Programme at the University of Canterbury (UC) is a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary initiative designed to offer students hands-on, work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences. Originally developed as an internship programme within the College of Arts, PACE has since evolved into a university-wide offering, providing students from all disciplines with the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings.

At its core, PACE is built to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Through its suite of interdisciplinary courses, students engage with authentic workplace environments, developing critical career skills and gaining exposure to professional contexts that align with their individual interests and aspirations. The programme is designed to foster equity, ensuring that students from across UC's diverse range of academic disciplines have access to meaningful work-integrated learning experiences.
Since its centralisation in 2022 within UC's Ako ā-Mahi | Work-Integrated Learning Hub, PACE has become a model for promoting interdisciplinary learning in WIL, addressing the growing complexity of today's workforce. By reimagining the curriculum to serve the needs of all students while maintaining academic rigor, PACE offers a blueprint for the future of WIL, empowering students to succeed in a dynamic, ever-evolving job market.
