He angitūtanga: The opportunity
Are you ready to spend your summer making a difference and having fun in the sun? Become a lifeguard at Auckland Council’s Pool and Leisure Centres.
As a seasonal lifeguard, you will ensure the safety and enjoyment of pool users by providing quality supervision and upholding health and safety standards.
As a Lifeguard, you are responsible for:
- Providing a safe environment through proactive supervision and positive interaction with customers
- Educating and enforcing pool rules
- Responding to any First Aid emergencies
- Ensuring our pool and the surrounding areas are always clean
The ideal candidate would be able to have flexibility work across a variety of shifts Monday – Sunday, and be able to work 4 hours on Saturday and Monday.
He kōrero mōu: About you
We are looking for strong swimmers, who are dedicated to helping others.
The first step in becoming a lifeguard for Auckland Council is to be able to pass this swim test. Please only apply for this position if you feel you can:
- Swim 200m in under 6 minutes
- Swim 25m sidestroke
- Swim 50m breaststroke
- Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool
- Tread water for 5 minutes
To work as a pool lifeguard in New Zealand, you will need to hold a Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC). We will provide ALL training for you free of charge and will pay for you to attend the training to enable you to get your Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC). You will be required to attend the following training dates at our West Wave location Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm:
- 02/12/2024 – 13/12/2024

Pay rate: $27.80 /hr
Auckland Council is committed to the protection and wellbeing of children. This role is classified as a Children's Worker role under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014. As such applicants will be required to undergo police vetting prior to commencing employment. This position is also deemed a safety sensitive position and will require pre-employment drug testing. Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory police check.
