Mō te tūranga | About the role
Are you looking for a better lifestyle and a workplace that is collaborative, progressive and passionate about learning? We are looking for an Orthopaedic Consultant with spinal experience as well as general orthopaedics and trauma who is willing to influence, lead change within the department and bring their passion and commitment for acute, elective and outpatients care to the fore. Dunedin City also offers excellent lifestyles choices including multiple recreation opportunities, excellent public and private schools, affordable living and big city charm while remaining compact and easy to get around.

Mō mātou | About us
Piki Te Ora (Southern DHB) covers the largest geographical catchment of all the DHB’s in New Zealand. We proudly strive to provide top quality healthcare to our diverse patient population, and we are now growing! Dunedin Hospital is situated in the city centre and serves a large geographical catchment area. The hospital is a teaching hospital of the University of Otago and has all major specialties. The Orthopaedic Department is currently staffed by 13 part-time Surgeons, and a Fellow in addition to 8 Registrars and 4 House Officers. All orthopaedic subspecialties are covered. Southern DHB has 3 part time surgeons with special interest in spines covering Southern DHB as well as scoliosis surgery for all of the South Island.

We are seeking an orthopaedic surgeon with a minimum 12 month advanced fellowship training in a recognised spinal surgery unit. You will be required in providing all aspects of spinal surgery including on call paediatric and adult trauma and degenerative and deformity surgery. It is expected you will have appropriate training in paediatric scoliosis as we provide this service to patients within the South Island. An interest in research is important but not exclusive.

Mōu ake | About you
The applicant should also be proficient in General Orthopaedics and trauma and the expected duties include:

  • Participation in a 1 in 11 on call roster.
  • Supervision of acute operating lists
  • Fracture clinics
  • Elective operating and outpatient clinics
  • A rural clinic
  • Support and leadership of junior medical staff and administrative duties
  • Participation in quality improvement, clinical audit activities and service development meetings and initiatives.

There are many opportunities for research within the department or in collaboration with the University. Equally as important will be your adaptability and, ideally, experience in clinical teaching. Applicants must have Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics or an equivalent qualification, enabling specialist (vocational) registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
The commencement date is negotiable. Remuneration and conditions will be based on your experience, the ASMS MECA and the recently agreed departmental job size.

Utu whānui | Salary range
This role belongs to the ASMS Collective Agreement and falls between the Step 1 ($185,380) and Step 15 ($267,980) per annum – dependant on prior experience and allowances in additional to this.
