Senior Forensic Accountant
Petone
FULL TIME
November 14, 2024
Role type: Permanent
Location: Wellington – other main centres considered
Salary Range: $98,955 to $115,691 depending on skills and experience
Kōrero mō te Tūranga – About the role
You read ‘a unique role' advertised all too often. In this case, it's true. There is just one Senior Forensic Accountant in Fisheries New Zealand. Fisheries New Zealand works to ensure that fisheries resources are managed to provide the greatest overall benefit to New Zealanders. Our focus is the sustainability of New Zealand's wild fish stocks, aquaculture, and the wider aquatic environment, now and for future generations. This role is pivotal to helping us realise this.
You'll be part of the Fisheries Compliance Monitoring and Intelligence team. You'll be focussed on assessing the compliance risk of commercial licensed fish receivers (LFRs) by ensuring they are compliant with reporting and recordkeeping regulations. You'll be supporting Fishery Officers both in the planning and undertaking of inspections of LFR premises, as well as providing advice and training. You'll be working very closely with Fishery Officers across the motu, in 11 Districts, so domestic travel is required for this role. You'll also be required to provide advice to the commercial fishing sector around their regulatory requirements.
Mōu - About You
You'll be a Chartered Accountant with full membership to CAANZ. You'll have a passion for law enforcement, for analysing big datasets, and detecting non-compliance . This means that you're more than just curious. If you're reading over a data set which looks too good to be true, you'll be the sort of person who drills down to find out why.
You are likely in a charted accountancy or, possibly from another Ministry with a compliance/regulatory function. Either way, you're looking for an operational role in which you can really push some boundaries. There will be some significant upskilling required for the commercial fisheries aspect of this role, this has been considered, and robust training will be provided to support you as you learn how we operate.
Education is an important component of this role, so you'll enjoy mentoring your broader team.
You will:
- Have an excellent understanding of accountancy principles and record keeping requirements as they relate to relevant New Zealand legislation
- Be adept at writing reports, a skill you'll need when briefing senior leaders across the business
- Be comfortable interrogating large data sets; there is an opportunity to bring a new thinking and ideas to how we deliver results, and there's an appetite to evolve our practices
- Have excellent communication skills (verbal, listening, and written) and being able to engage constructively with a wide range of people across the fisheries sector and government
- Have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an ability to apply Māori knowledge and values to your work
- Some of Government processes including Parliamentary processes tangata whenua, stakeholders, and Government agencies
- Some knowledge of fisheries management and regulatory frameworks would be an advantage, but not essential
- Require a NZ Divers Licence
Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team
Directorate. The Monitoring & Intelligence team, comprises Advisors and Analysts, from a variety of backgrounds. The wider team's reach is broad, advising on practices, monitoring and offence detection not only in New Zealand waters, but also internationally across the Pacific and Southern Oceans. There is a huge depth of experience and expertise within the team and across the Directorate so you'll be well supported.
