Vianode is an advanced battery materials company providing sustainable anode graphite solutions for the battery and EV value chains in North America and Europe. Vianode’s breakthrough solution enables tailored high-performance synthetic anode graphite and a holistic sustainability offering including a 90% reduction in CO2 footprint. The company is currently preparing to start its first full-scale plant at Herøya, Norway, before executing its multi-billion dollar phased investment program for large-scale plants in North America and Europe. The long-term ambition is to supply advanced battery materials to 3 million EVs per year by 2030. Vianode is owned by the world-leading industrial and financial companies Hydro and Altor.
About the Position:
In this position you will be responsible for the overall management of the laboratory at the Vianode Technology Center (VTC) including staffing, new instrument acquisition and start up, expansion projects, testing methods, interaction with customers on testing for material qualification under PPAP, Instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting of quality and start up issues at the plants related to materials testing results. In addition, you will be involved in the design and startup of a second laboratory facility in North America. Some European and International travel is required.

Key Responsibilities:
- Direct laboratory strategy for instrument acquisition, expansion and staffing needs.
- Manage analytical methods to ensure consistency with customer requirements and quality standards. Continuous improvement of analytical methods, development and implementation of new methods in collaboration with customers and external laboratories.
- Oversee daily operations of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and quality standards.
- Manage laboratory staff, including scheduling, training, and performance evaluations.
- Coordinate with product managers on testing activities and priorities.
- Troubleshoot technical issues in collaboration with product managers and plant quality and process engineering.
- Collaborate with other departments to support interdisciplinary research initiatives.
- Master’s degree in science with a preference for Chemistry or Materials Science; Ph D preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in laboratory management, with a preference for some industrial or commercial laboratory experience.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing and scaling laboratory operations in a dynamic environment.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor staff.
- Deep expertise in advanced laboratory techniques and instrumentation, particularly in XRD, XRF, or Raman spectroscopy.
- Understanding of materials crystal structure analysis
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in laboratory operations.
- Familiarity with relevant software and data analysis tools.
- This role involves travel, particularly as we expand our operations into North America. While the exact amount of travel is yet to be determined, candidates must be prepared for potential trips based on the demands of our expansion efforts.
- Skilled in analyzing complex data and research findings to ensure the highest quality standards in laboratory operations.
- Capable of quickly adapting to evolving technology and research priorities to drive innovation in battery technology.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to motivate and mentor staff, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
- Strong communication skills in English are required. Proficiency in Norwegian is a bonus.
