Overview of role: The School Counsellor at Trinityhouse Glenvista High School is a vital support in nurturing students academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually within a Christian educational setting.
Responsibilities:
Counselling Services:
Provide holistic counselling addressing academic, social, and emotional aspects.
Assist in developing coping skills and resilience.
Collaboration:
Work with teachers to address academic and behavioural concerns.
Collaborate with parents for student development, involving them as needed.
Crisis Intervention:
Respond to crises, providing support to students, staff, and parents.
Coordinate external resources when necessary.
Educational Programming:
Develop programs promoting social-emotional learning.
Record Keeping
Maintain confidential records of sessions, assessments, and interventions.
Provide regular updates on student progress to administration and parents.
Professional Development:
Stay updated on counselling trends and attend relevant training.
Referrals to Psychologists:
The Counsellor recognizes the need for external assistance in severe cases, collaborating with psychologists. Responsibilities include assessment, communication, referral facilitation, follow-up, and advocacy for students' best interests.
Extended Support for Students:
Dedicated to diverse student needs, the Counsellor provides extended support through identification, individualized plans, collaboration, monitoring, advocacy, and referrals to external resources.
Informing the Principal:
Maintain open communication with the principal, providing regular updates, collaborating on decisions, crisis situations, strategic planning, and professional development alignment with school goals. Effective communication between the School Counsellor and the principal is integral to maintaining a cohesive and supportive learning environment. By providing regular updates and collaborating on key decisions, the counsellor ensures that the principal remains well-informed about the holistic development and well-being of the students in the school community.
Minimum Requirements:
Completed Honours in Psychology
Registration with HPCSA or accredited counselling body
