Security Services Group (SSG) is a business unit within the DIO which assists the Mo D and the wider Government Estate in meeting its security requirements.
SSG provides specialist security advice, compliance, and assurance to areas of the government sector that require the highest levels of security protection. SSG is the Government’s expert provider specialising in design, installation, and maintenance of both custom in-house security systems and highly accredited commercial products on the government estate.
Working as part of a 230-person team, we provide full life support services to UK Defence and Government sites throughout the UK and overseas.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
We are looking for a motivated and passionate professional to join as a Senior Advisor within the Protective Security Advisory Team (PSAT). You will be responsible for the provision of in-depth independent unbiased technical security advice to SSG’s Central Government and other clients. This includes detailed guidance as well as converting user requirements into technical specifications and undertaking system audits.
This role requires travel across the UK and occasional overseas visits, including overnight accommodation. We will provide you with the choice of a non-liveried company vehicle to work across the UK and you can opt in to use this for personal use.
Person specification
The Senior Advisor’s main responsibility is to advise on protective electronic security. Other requirements include:
  • Possess in-depth technical security knowledge and experience with proven time served experience in the field of security. This shall be in the field of electronic security (IDS/VSS/AACS/Sy L/PIDS/System Integration) with an aspirational knowledge of Physical security (Barriers, Structures, Locking-devices, Doors & HVM).
  • Excellent communication skills: Provide customer interface and represent SSG at high level external meetings. Undertake complex discussions and negotiations with SSG Project Managers and Client Security Officers for Key Project accounts.
  • Present focused technical security training for SSG’s staff and external clients.
  • Have excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a small team.
  • Have financial management skills: estimating, job costing, invoicing, and budget management.
  • Demonstrate a flexible approach to work and a willingness to attend site meetings and other locations when necessary.
  • Working knowledge of British, European and Government Standards relating to security together with knowledge of QA and H&S policies.

ONC/OND/HNC/HND/Degree in Electronic Security/Engineering (or Equivalent Government/MOD recognised qualification in electronic security).

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
