The role of a lab technician is varied and covers a wide range of different tasks; however, you will be primarily responsible for the receipt and preparation of samples for the analysis of chemical residues and contaminants in foods.
Salary: £23,400
Location: York Bio Tech Campus, YO41 1LZ
Working pattern: 37.5 Monday – Friday (flexi between 7am & 7pm)
Start date: ASAP depending on recruitment and onboarding timelines.

What you’ll be doing:

• Maintain a supply of clean glassware and general consumables to the laboratories.
• Ensure the Maintenance of clean working environments in the laboratories and store cupboards, shelving and storage. Liaise with lab users when necessary to ensure that working areas are clean and safe.
• Monitor and arrange for disposal of waste solvent, general waste and clinical waste.
• To act as procurement superuser, raising purchase orders, ordering consumables and equipment
• To monitor the teams reagent/solvent stocks and prepare/order when necessary.
• Calibrate pipettes and ovens/incubators. Carry out weight checks on the balances and temperature checks on the fridges and freezers. Maintain all instrument records, using Q-pulse software, for which responsibility is held to UKAS standards.
• Log samples and chemicals onto the laboratory information management system.

What we’re looking for:

• Practical IT experience, in particular Microsoft Packages such as Word and Excel.
• Ability to keep clear written records.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions efficiently.
• Ability to recognise when things have potential to go wrong.
• Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
• Self-motivated and have an ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues and other team members.
• A methodical approach to work and attention to detail.

Note: The nature of this role is routine / repetitive and requires regular handling of raw animal flesh and fluids, cereals, nuts and other foodstuffs
