Principal Highways Engineer

Working Pattern: 37 hrs per week – Monday to Friday
Location: West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 (Hybrid working)
We are looking for a Principal Highways Engineer to join our Major Projects & Design Team based at our Trent Bridge House Office in West Bridgford (hybrid working).
You will be the technical lead to a team of engineers in the design and delivery of highway and civil engineering projects to internal and external clients as part of Via’s Design Consultancy Service.
The Job
Key areas of responsibility will include:
- Manage available resources and capacity within the team to ensure successful delivery of the teams work programme, ensuring quality outputs and compliance with relevant duties, policies, and procedures.
- Design and manage the delivery of projects including highway geometric alignment, pavement, and drainage design.
- Manage the provision of specialist technical expertise in delivery of highway design and civil engineering input to internal and external clients.
- Lead the evaluation and authorisation of externally designed engineering schemes to ensure compliance with appropriate design specification and safety standards.
- Lead and support Health and Safety management across the service ensuring that health and safety legislation, policy and best practice is fully adhered to.
- Carry out the duties of Principal Designer to comply with the Construction Design and Management Regulations.
- Monitor staff performance, coach and act as a mentor in developing technical expertise of team members to assist with achieving performance targets and future potential.
- Act as an ambassador for individual schemes and the Company across professional, business and community events and networks.
Mainly you will be excited to be a vital part of our Major Project & Design Team, but there are just a few other things we’d like from you: –
- A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent knowledge gained through practical experience in a highway and/or civil engineering environment.
- Ability to lead a team in a design environment, to make decisions and collaboratively solve problems.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to gain agreement and acceptance of others including colleagues, senior managers, and clients.
- Ability to work collaboratively and actively involve colleagues and members of the team.
- Strong ICT skills including Microsoft Office applications and competence in specialist computer applications used to support highway design and civil engineering activities.
- Knowledge and demonstrable experience of design standards appropriate to highway design and civil engineering and contract preparation.
- Knowledge of procurement practices used in design and construction.
- Proven experience of providing information, communicating, and working collaboratively with internal and external customers, stakeholders, and colleagues to achieve delivery objectives.
- Proven experience of financial monitoring and control across a range of projects.
- Proficient at project delivery with proven experience of all stages of project implementation from feasibility to construction on site within a highway and/or civil engineering environment.
Based in Nottinghamshire, with a multi-skilled local workforce and a range of highly trained staff at a few different locations throughout the county. Via East Midlands provides sustainable highways services for Nottinghamshire and across the wider East Midlands region.
