Job summary
The posts are with a specialist technical communications unit formed from military, civil service and contractor personnel. The unit is centred at the very heart of operations and provides Communications Information Systems (CIS) with support to static and forward deployed units, delivering operationally critical services globally. This role requires a driven and multidimensional individual who can employ process to meet the requirements of the business and our end users. Roles within the unit are diverse and exciting, with a wide scope of personal development and progression.
Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities. Throughout, the Command’s transformation programme is committed to following the MOD’s framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Command’s personnel and Trade Unions.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The successful candidate(s) will work as part of a 24/7 shift (2 x Day Shifts, 2 x Night Shifts, 4 x Rest days cycle) to deliver and sustain specialist CIS to static and deployed users worldwide. This full, complex and exciting role requires dedication and a willingness to continually learn and improve skills.
The role(s) will require:
An individual who can employ process to complete tasks and identify then resolve underlying issues. They should be a good team member and take ownership of problems until assigned to an appropriate resolver.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, be able to focus on a task whilst handling a diverse workload, the ability to apply good judgement based on knowledge and experience where needed.
Ability to perform in a flexible and dynamic manner to keep pace with the operational requirements of the unit.
Person specification
As a UKCB Operator, you will be expected to
  • Process messages and data between communications systems at various security classifications.
  • Set up, test and operate a variety of communications systems.
  • Monitor alarm systems and react appropriately to alerts.
  • Monitor Networks and take the appropriate action in response to faults and alerts.
  • Handle access control for secure areas and uphold building security during silent hours.
  • Maintain full and complete logs of all activities undertaken during the shift.
  • Handle and set up Video Telephone Conferences.
  • Be able to work multi-functionally with other teams within unit to resolve issues and problems and feedback to management teams.
