Job summary
Working within the RAF Wittering Total Safety Centre in a small team of safety professionals, you will be working directly for the Station Safety, Health & Environmental Advisor (SHEA). Together you will be responsible for all aspects of Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) management, ensuring compliance with legislation and Mo D policy on behalf of the Head of Establishment (Ho E), while taking the lead on environmental matters. This high-profile role covers the entirety of the Wittering estate, plus several affiliated satellite locations, helping ensure the safety of the whole force military, civilian and contractor personnel and protection of the environment.
Wittering airbase is home to the RAF Support Force, responsible for the generation and deployment of vital engineering and logistic support needed to sustain RAF operations and exercises around the world, and an active aerodrome that supports elementary flying training and visiting aircraft. This role has been established to provide additional capacity and resilience to a vital capability in support of a growing establishment of over 1000 personnel.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description
As Deputy Safety, Health & Environmental Advisor you will support the SHEA in all their responsibilities, deputising for them when necessary. You will take the lead on Environmental issues, directly advising the Ho E on any ongoing and emerging issues, while helping deliver a more sustainable, resilient and resource efficient Station.
Your duties will also include:
  • Provide specialist advice to the Ho E, resident unit Commanding Officers, and their executives, on all aspects of HS&E matters, specialising in environmental matters.
  • Deliver the Station’s Environmental Management Plan.
  • Ensure contractors and visiting workers can work safely through management of the 4C’s, Co-operate, Communicate, Co-ordinate and Control, liaising between building custodians, contractors, industry partners and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in recording HS&E incidents, accidents and occurrences, and their causes.
  • Assist the investigation of significant HS&E occurrences, referring relevant issues to the appropriate authority with recommendations.
  • Support internal and external health, safety, and environmental assurance activities, including safety and environmental inspections of buildings, installations, and facilities site-wide.
  • Engage with related external agencies and regulators as necessary.
  • Promote health, safety and environmental awareness and adherence to policy,
  • Supervise the management of environmental risks and assist SHEA with safety risks as necessary.
  • Act as Radiation, Electromagnetic, and Laser Safety Officer for the Station.
  • Travel to other Mo D locations on occasion to complete duties and training.
  • Undertake appropriate professional development to maintain and enhance knowledge.

Person specification
The position requires a highly motivated individual who works well in a team and is confident in using IT with a good grasp of MS Office, Teams, and data analysis. You must be able to communicate effectively to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to efficiently deliver your responsibilities.
You will be working toward or have a NEBOSH General Certificate in Health & Safety and/or Certificate in Environmental Management, with recent experience in a similar role. You will have an interest in environmental protection and conservation legislation so that you can provide effective support to the SHEA . You will be required to promote environmental issues on behalf of the Ho E.
You will be provided with Mo D approved training that you will be required to complete within 6 months where practicable.
Licences
A full UK driving licence is necessary to efficiently travel around site in performance of their duties in provided vehicle.

The advertised role is flexible and can be undertaken through a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
