We seek a colleague whose scholarship will be centered on the study of coral physiology, symbiosis, reproduction, and thermal tolerance applied to human interventions to conserve corals and coral reef function, including coral reef conservation and active restoration and understanding of coral resilience in the face of a changing climate. This work should have applications to management and policy by establishing long-term relationships with resource managers and Pacific Islander communities to co-develop research that meets the need to conserve and restore coral reefs in Hawai?i and the Pacific Islands. The successful candidate should demonstrate interdisciplinary thinking and expertise in synthesizing multiple data sources using leading approaches such as data science, informatics, machine learning, -omics, solutions-oriented technology development, or modeling. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose research is directly relevant to nearshore marine resource management in Hawai‘i and engaged with state, federal and local partners working on coral reef conservation in Hawai‘i

Duties and Responsibilities
The Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB), School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai'i at Manoa, seeks applications for an Assistant Researcher faculty member in the field of coral physiology, symbiosis, reproduction, and thermal tolerance applied to human interventions to conserve corals and coral reef function, including coral reef conservation and active restoration and understanding of coral resilience in the face of a changing climate.

1. Conduct scientific research into coral reproductive biology, symbiosis ecology, selective breeding of corals for increased thermal tolerance, scaling of human interventions for coral restoration, molecular mechanisms of thermal tolerance of corals and their symbionts, mechanisms of variation among thermal tolerance of corals in nature, and active restoration of resilient coral reefs.
2. Maintain and oversee the HIMB Coral Resilience Lab, and associated state-of-the-art coral reproduction, husbandry, and stress-testing facilities.
3. Write proposals for continued support, administer those grants and oversee any required reporting and compliance.
4. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, research assistants, and postdoctoral scholars.
5. Analyze data and publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, present results at appropriate professional conferences or public meetings, and advise state and federal partners regarding coral reef management and restoration activities.
6. Contribute to the Marine Biology Graduate Program, including serving on committees, advising graduate students, and designing and teaching courses related to field of specialty.
7. Participate in Institute initiatives in coral and coastal resilience, outreach and stewardship, and graduate education.
8. Demonstrates professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
9. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph D from an accredited college or university in the fields of Marine Biology, Marine Sciences, Biological Oceanography, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology or equivalent life sciences degree.
  • At least one year of post-doctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and promoting the advancement of underrepresented groups in academic fields of study.
  • At least 5 years of experience with coral reproductive biology, larval rearing and settlement of corals.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with sound critical thinking and rigorous scientific methods that stand up to peer review.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate results to the science community through high quality peer-reviewed publications (including both first-authored and senior-authored publications), public presentations, and media news outlets.
  • Demonstrated history of obtaining extramural funding in support of coral restoration or coral resilience projects, and direct experience with construction and maintenance of coral husbandry facilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills able to communicate science to a wide range of audiences, demonstrated through experience working with State, Federal, and NGO stakeholders on coral reef restoration or coral resiliency issues.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of marine biologists, oceanographers, engineers, and resource managers to address causes or potential technological solutions to coral reef loss.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analyses and visualization, including scripting in R or an equivalent programming language, BASH scripting, statistical analyses, Arc GIS, bioinformatics, machine learning approaches, or modeling.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with field-based coral research including scientific diving, small boat operations, and associated first-aid & safety training.
  • Demonstrated experience with coral reef restoration activities and genotype-by-environment or heritability assays in corals.
  • Experience with teaching, invited lectures, public speaking and media interviews.
  • Service to resource management agencies through documented uptake of work into policy or participation on scientific advisory boards.
