Environmental Scientist III- Mosquito Control

Introduction
DNREC's Mosquito Control Section provides mosquito control services throughout Delaware. During the warmer months, Mosquito Control monitors and treats mosquito populations that emerge from wetland areas found throughout the state, including ditches, stormwater ponds, wet woodlands, and coastal salt marshes.

Summary Statement
The incumbent is responsible for conducting scientific and operational aspects involved in running a large area mosquito control program including: conducting mosquito surveillance and abatement practices, mosquito disease surveillance, calibration of insecticide application equipment, training of seasonal employees, preparing data summaries and technical reports, analyzing and evaluating scientific data, data entry and manipulation using standard data processing software, conducting mosquito related research, presenting research at professional conferences, serving on professional mosquito control association boards, and conducting public outreach and education.

  • 6 months experience in mosquito control including mosquito population monitoring, arbovirus surveillance, and insecticide use.
Essential Functions

  • Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
  • Performs statistical analysis of data.
  • Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
  • Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
  • Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  • Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Six months experience in technical report writing.
