Job Description
To teach the academic curriculum to all prisoners and provide special educational services to those determined to be eligible for specialized services (special education). Special education teachers are expected to complete Individualized Educational Plans (IEP) and schedule Individual Educational Program Team IEPT) meetings to qualify or disqualify prisoners for special education services and provide advocacy for students, supplemental instructions and assistance to those eligible prisoners determined to need Special Education services. These services are to be delivered within the general education and in some instances service3s include vocational classes. Special education teachers also invite surrogate parents and/or parents, if lien cleared, to IEP and/or IEPT or obtain permission form one or the other entity to conduct IEPs and IEPT meetings for prisoners 17 years of age or under. The position also supports the reentry mission, is a covered position and located behind the secure perimeter of a correctional facility. This position may also involve performing duties at multiple facilities, as well as, varying hours and days.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Possession of current Michigan teaching certificate (or equivalent) with a special education endorsement in autism, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, learning disabilities, physical education for students with disabilities, physical or other health impairment, speech and language impairment, and/or visual impairment.
The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017
.
Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.

Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.
