Claims Governance Officer

Reporting to the Trustee Office Insurance Governance Leader, this position is responsible for assisting in Mercer Superannuation (Australia) Limited’s (MSAL’s) adherence to the insurance governance regulatory framework, particularly with regard to Claims Management, in respect of the Mercer Super Trust and the Mercer Portfolio Service Superannuation Plan (the Funds).
While the primary focus of the role is on claims management, this position may be involved in other governance activities for MSAL as appropriate from time to time.

We will count on you to:
- Participate in the maintenance of a robust claims management structure, which includes oversight of insurers’ decisions, and equitable distribution of death benefit, taking into account trust deeds, insurance policies and superannuation law
- Make decisions on the distribution of the death benefits and providing reasons for the decisions
- Review and summarise material relied upon by insurers’ in reaching a decision to decline a claim, to ensure the decision is fair and reasonable (preferred)
- Participate and make decisions in relation to objections to death claim distribution decisions, and other claims related complaints
- Actively work with the insurers and administrators, to ensure the trustee is meeting its obligations under SIS, LICOP and FSC Standard 28
- Continually review and challenge the way things are done, in order to seek more streamlined processes and better member experiences and outcomes
- Understand and maintain knowledge of relevant trust deeds and the various insurers’ policy documentation
- Liaise with a number of internal and external stakeholders including, Mercer Super and related and third-party service provider management teams, Claims Assessors and Managers from service providers, including both insurers and administrators.
What you need to have:
- Relevant superannuation industry experience, including relevant experience in a financial services role with a group insurance focus, and preferably experience in a governance role
- Experience or ability to make claim related decisions on behalf of the trustee
- Excellent working knowledge of a trustee’s role and responsibilities, and the superannuation regulatory framework
- Detailed knowledge of claims management and assessment and understanding of superannuation and insurance legislation and current issues
- Strong stakeholder management and negotiation skills
- RG 146 qualified (preferred).
