Job Purpose:
As a member of the CBC News Ops Team and reporting to the Sr. Director of News Operations, you will play a key role in developing and delivering the operational flexibility and agility that are essential to delivering the capabilities that CBC News requires to realize its mission and audience strategy.
As Sr. Manager, you will lead the planning, implementation and ongoing operation of a new function that brings together resources, planning and assignment teams currently embedded in various parts of the organization with the goal of developing a holistic approach to resource allocation based on audience strategy and service objectives that builds the capability to redirect resources to offer live coverage of news events, both planned and unplanned, with a focus on reaching audiences on digital platforms. You will build a collaborative work environment and have the opportunity to work with teams across the organization. To be successful in this role, you will need an understanding of media production and metadata-driven workflows.
You will support change management initiatives by facilitating communication between the teams involved in producing and distributing news content, ensuring a clear understanding of the proposed changes. You will play a crucial role in identifying potential challenges, developing mitigation strategies, and supporting people throughout the transformation process.
Your priority will be to lead cross-functional groups focused on flexible and nimble content production that support the digital transformation. Modern tools that enable collaboration and seamless communication are critical components of story-centric, audience-first newsrooms.
The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to guide initiatives that will improve the audience experience, delivering news content to meet audience interest and need. You will oversee the prioritization and allocation of production resources for CBC News within the Toronto Broadcast Centre and local stations in southern Ontario. And you will be a key stakeholder in projects to implement new tools and workflows that will make it easier for us to create and distribute content.
Our content production, publication and presentation environment is composed of many platforms and systems supported by a number of functional groups within the organization. The ability to collaborate with these teams and align our collective efforts is key to succeeding in this role.
You will be expected to gather business requirements through various facilitation and discovery methods with multiple collaborators, then analyse and interpret these requirements to define project outcomes, deliverables, schedules and execution plans. By analyzing data, you will identify and implement efficiencies to optimize business processes to ensure the sustainability and expansion of new initiatives.
Main responsibilities and impact:
  • Lead the development and implementation of a story-centric, audience-first Resource and Planning centre, leveraging modern technologies, data analytics, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define the strategic objectives, scope, and roadmap for the Resource and Planning Centre, ensuring alignment with News Strategy.
  • Establish robust processes, workflows, and systems to optimize resource allocation, coverage planning, and content delivery, with a focus on reliability, trustworthiness, and efficiency.
  • Drive problem-solving and continuous improvement within the Resource and Planning Centre, fostering a culture of learning, adaptability, and organization.
  • Partner with editorial, production, and technical teams to develop comprehensive coverage plans for live and on-demand content, incorporating audience insights and market trends.
  • Oversee the coordination of production needs including, but not limited to, field gathering, ingesting, content distribution, pop-up bureaus, live events, etc.
  • Oversee the production needs of Local teams in Toronto and Southern Ontario, including collaborating with cross-functional teams to operationalize streaming.
  • Monitor key performance metrics and analytics to assess the effectiveness of coverage strategies and identify opportunities for optimization and refinement.

  • Interact with peers, other colleagues, and senior management across the CBC News division, and positively influence others to achieve results.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in media production, journalism or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Qualifications:
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of media production tools, technology, and infrastructure required for live and on-demand news, for distribution on terrestrial, streaming, and mobile platforms
  • Strong understanding of audience consumption behaviour, audience needs, and our News Strategy
  • Reliable, collaborative, highly organized manager with proven ability to empower teams and implement clear workflows and processes
  • Long-term planning skills, ability to identify production requirements for future state
  • Negotiation skills (internal and external) - a strong asset
  • Functional bilingualism (English/French) - a strong asset
Experience (relevant to the role):
  • 5 years experience as a manager in media production, with a proven track record of reliability, data-driven planning, and the ability to build collaborative relationships and bring teams together.
