Job Posting Details

The Office of Knowledge Transfer (OKT) serves as a bridge between the HKUST research community and industry, creating collaboration and innovation from the University research outcomes and capabilities. OKT manages inventions and Intellectual Properties (IP) of HKUST, formulates strategic commercialization plans, identifies potential collaborators with faculty members, and establishes commercialization projects with industry partners. OKT also incubates and supports HKUST’s technology-based start-ups and encourages entrepreneurship development. The Office is inviting competent and passionate professionals to join the knowledge transfer team.

Reporting to the Head (Intellectual Property Management) and working closely with research centers and faculty members, key responsibilities of the appointee include:
  • Manage University’s IP portfolio and Knowledge Management procedures, including invention review, patent drafting, patent filing and patent maintenance, to maximize the impact of the University’s research activities;
  • Provide IP landscape, competitive analysis and freedom-to-operate analysis for the key development projects and support the Cluster Heads of OKT to set up the commercialization strategy;
  • Supervise external patent firms to provide timely and proper response on filing and replying to office actions with quality;
  • Manage patent budgets and expenses.
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or higher degree in semiconductor, electronic engineering, science, IP law, or related disciplines, with relevant working experience, preferably playing the role of an in-house IP manager/patent attorney/patent engineer/paralegal in technology companies, research institutions or law firms. Solid experiences and familiarity with patent analytic database for strategic IP management, preferably in IP management, proper prior art search and go around strategy, freedom to operate analysis, product-IP mapping, IP portfolio strategy; and previous experience in education or applied research institutions would be a plus. Candidates with less experience will be considered as Assistant Manager (Intellectual Property Management). (Duration: 2 years, renewable)

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
