This Ph D position is part the national program Crop XR’s core research. The subproject “The role of root plasticity in resilience” will run under supervision of Prof dr Christa Testerink in Wageningen. You will be working in a team together with other experimental and computational plant scientists. In this Ph D project, you will focus on key genes and molecular pathways predicted to steer developmental plasticity of Arabidopsis roots under drought. Using novel mathematical modelling, network inference approaches and existing knowledge we will identify networks downstream of drought perception and establish how these impinge on and are integrated with basal root development. We will test the contribution of these networks to root architectural plasticity under water deficit stress.
Besides carrying out the research project, you will contribute to teaching MSc and BSc students.

About Crop XR
Crop XR was launched in 2023 to contribute to improving agricultural production by making it less vulnerable to climate change. With a budget of 96 million euros for the next ten years, Crop XR focuses on creating e Xtra Resilient (XR), sustainable, and climate adaptive crops. By combining plant biology, simulation modelling, and artificial intelligence we aim to develop ‘smart breeding and cultivation’ methods. The institute is a joint venture of the universities of Amsterdam, Delft, Wageningen and Utrecht in partnership with Plantum, the Dutch plant breeding sector association. You will work here
The research is embedded within the Laboratory of Plant Physiology chair group which is led by Prof. Christa Testerink. You will be member of the research team focusing on root responses to salinity and drought (rootsinsalt.com). Wageningen University & Research offers excellent terms of employment. The gross salary for the first year is € 2.872 - per month rising to € 3.670,- in the fourth year in according to the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) (scale P). This is based on a full-time working week of 38 hours. We offer a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended for the duration of the project if you perform well.

• affinity and/or experience with interdisciplinary research;
