Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Principal Advisor to join the Welfare & Oranga Tamariki Team (WOT team) on a fixed term basis from October 2024 to early June 2025 to cover a period of parental leave. The WOT team is responsible for three large social policy votes: Social Development, Oranga Tamariki, and Disability, and the newly established Social Investment vote. The team works closely with other central agencies to support the agencies responsible for these votes. It leads the Treasury's advice to Ministers on the value for money of government spending in social policy and on the social policy system and reforms. Additionally, the team coordinates with other Treasury teams that lead system advice, including the Budget and the Fiscal Sustainability Programme.
Our principal advisors provide insightful and innovative public sector analysis and advice. They build authentic relationships through an inclusive, collaborative and constructive style to enhance performance of public services. We value agility and as well as focus on coaching and building capability in a supportive team environment.
You will:
  • Be a proven thought leader experienced in advising on social policy reform programmes with a working knowledge or experience in Treasury's vote role in the public finance system
  • Be a highly skilled communicator who can navigate challenging situations and relationships and have the ability to represent the Treasury in senior forums in a confidently and collaboratively
  • Be an effective operator who can pivot from the urgent and critical to the strategic to support the manager and the team to focus on the most important issues
  • Be resilient with the ability to operate effectively in an extremely fast-paced, changeable and ambiguous environment
