He angitūtanga | About the role
Are you a budding botanist or ecologist looking to make an impact for conservation in the field of biodiversity monitoring?
We're seeking a couple of dedicated Support Officers (Samples) to help DOC track, receive, and process essential biodiversity samples from our field teams. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful ecological research while developing your skills in a dynamic environment!
The position will be focussed on:
  • tracking the lifecycle of samples and log them in our database upon receipt
  • processing biodiversity samples following rigorous Quality Assurance (QA) steps according to established procedures
  • utilising sample management systems to support the biodiversity monitoring program
  • identifying and addressing QA issues, collaborating with the Technical Support Officer on patterns
  • assisting with warehousing projects and manage sample storage and archiving.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
  • A relevant qualification in biology, ecology, botany or the natural sciences.
  • Knowledge and practice experience in biodiversity monitoring methods.
  • Confident handling of vascular samples, chew cards, and soil samples
  • Data management and accurate data digitisation (data entry)
  • Quick learner with proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Excellent instruction-following skills and a proactive approach to seeking clarification.
  • Strong documentation skills to track progress effectively.
  • Understanding of office protocol and professional etiquette.
  • Clear and confident communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Working and delivering to tight timeframes.

The Monitoring and Insights Directorate focuses on developing system-wide intervention logic to describe how DOC achieves its outcomes; to not only deliver conservation, but also to tell the story of what was achieved with supporting evidence.
Our key functions include research, planning, monitoring, analysis, reporting, infrastructure, frameworks, tools, processes, information management, and capability.

The salary range for this position is $58,816 - $66,578 pro-rata with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
