Operations Manager

Cape Town

FULL TIME

October 17, 2024

Agora Microfinance Group:
Is a leading microfinance investor-operator group, based in the Netherlands. It finances, creates, and builds socially focused and financially sustainable microfinance institutions in Africa and Asia. Over the past 10 years, it has built a strong track record of establishing impactful financial institutions that deeply connect with the laws and society of the countries it serves. The mission is to advance financial inclusion by financing viable informal livelihoods in underserved communities. Their subsidiaries have received numerous awards and investments from social investors due to their significant social impact through financial products and services.
About the Company:
Agora Microfinance South Africa, a registered credit provider and subsidiary of the Agora Microfinance Group, has been recently established to provide financial services in South Africa. With a mission to promote financial inclusion in a sustainable and market-driven way, the organization aims to make a positive impact on underserved communities. In its initial phase, Agora Microfinance will focus on serving urban and semi-urban clients in and around Cape Town, offering customized financial products through cashless systems. To help execute its vision and lead the launch of its operations, the company is now looking for an Operations Manager.
About the role:
We seek a hands-on Operations Manager to spearhead our efforts in establishing a strong presence, fostering relationships within local communities, and developing operations from the ground up. The ideal candidate is a proactive self-starter with excellent communication skills, cultural awareness, and a passion for promoting financial inclusion. The Operations Manager will oversee all operational functions, ensuring exceptional customer service, streamlined processes, and a high-quality loan portfolio. This full-time role requires regular travel to potential branch locations, with initial lending activities focused on the Western Cape.
If you are driven by the idea of finding practical financial solutions for the under-banked, thrive in a dynamic start-up environment, and enjoy working within a small, dedicated team, we encourage you to apply.
Key responsibilities:
  • Identify new market opportunities, partnerships, and revenue streams to drive our organization’s growth and impact.
  • Forge strong connections with rural communities in the Western Cape, understanding their needs, challenges, and aspirations related to financial products and services.
  • Collaborate with community leaders and local organizations to establish trust, credibility, and mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Lead by example, fostering a culture of honesty, transparency, and ethical behavior throughout the organization.
  • Utilize knowledge of the financial sector in South Africa to create suitable and efficient financial products and services that cater to the unique needs of our target group.
  • Lead the ongoing development and implementation of responsible, accessible and impactful products through regular evaluation and monitoring.
  • Manage day-to-day activities including loan processing, disbursement, collections, and customer service to ensure seamless service delivery.
  • Maintain adherence to all South African laws, regulations, and internal policies, ensuring operational integrity and accountability.
  • Develop and execute operational strategies that align with our mission, driving the organization towards its long-term objectives.
  • Create and implement robust risk management frameworks that safeguard our operations while enabling growth.
  • Analyze key performance metrics like client retention, product growth, branch profitability, and loan performance to drive continuous improvement and maximize impact.
Eligibility criteria:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in operational management within financial services, microfinance or community development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Operations Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • South African citizenship or residence.
Key competencies:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges faced by under-banked communities in South Africa and the analytical ability to respond to the nature of their demand and capacity.
  • Excellent communication skills to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • High ethical standards and integrity.
  • Resilience and adaptability to navigate complex social and economic landscapes.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of operational best practices and regulatory requirements in South Africa.
Working conditions and benefits:
  • This is a full-time role, based in the Western Cape, that will require frequent travel during the initial phase to engage directly with the communities and establish operations.
  • We offer a competitive salary and benefits package and the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment.
  • You will initially manage a small team, with plans for expansion as the portfolio develops. Additionally, you will have the support of a dedicated team at the holding level, with direct guidance from the Group COO, based in Cape Town.
