The Washington Post

Seoul Hub Editor

FULL TIME

August 21, 2024

Job Description
The Washington Post is looking for the next leader of its high-performing breaking news hub in Seoul. We expect the person who fills this role to start in January 2025.
The breaking-news team in Seoul plays a critical role in The Post’s round-the-clock operations. Its primary focus is covering live news as it unfolds in the United States and around the globe during daytime hours in Seoul – overnight in Washington, D.C.
The successful candidate is an agile, collaborative and experienced editor with a distinguished track record overseeing news coverage of the highest caliber. This job requires a confident, knowledgeable leader with a clear grasp of major storylines in the United States, Asia-Pacific and the world.
Responsibilities:
  • Drive The Post’s breaking-news coverage during the hub’s designated turn each day running point for global news decisions within our 24-hour workflow.
  • Oversee a team of eight hard-charging reporters and editors whose work must be integrated seamlessly with The Post’s twin breaking-news operation in London and with departments and teams across the Washington, D.C., newsroom, including International, National and the General Assignment desk.
  • Exercise consistently excellent news judgement and story selection instincts in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
  • Foster a supportive, empathetic work culture that furthers staff development and sets high expectations for achievement.
  • Assume a leadership role in developing workflows and tools that allow more efficient coordination between the international hubs and D.C.-based teams and that elevate the quality of our Live storytelling.
Qualifications:
  • At least 10 years of professional journalism experience, with at least 5 years as an editor shaping coverage at digital pace for a major English-language publication.
  • Digital savvy and the ability to lead with urgency, clarity and empathy.
  • Familiarity with major storylines in the United States and around the world.
  • Experience leading and coaching on audience development tactics, from headline writing to platform targeting. Knowledge of analytics, social media and digital content distribution is also critical.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit.
  • A commitment to employing storytelling formats that use graphics and other visual elements – plus video and audio – to make complex issues accessible to a broad audience.
This position will be based in Seoul and staffed through TWP South Korea LLC in South Korea, subject to local legal requirements. Some weekend shifts will be required.
Candidates should upload a cover letter outlining their qualifications and vision for the role, along with a résumé, to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Sept. 6 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Managing Editor Scott Vance and International Editor Douglas Jehl.
The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.
The innovation doesn’t end in the Newsroom – dozens of teams power The Washington Post. We are now hiring the next innovator – how will you Impact Tomorrow?
