The School of Medicine is guided by 4 strategic goals: research distinction, innovative education, clinical excellence, and being the region's top destination for complex care. UCI School of Medicine has 24 departments, ranging from basic science research to clinical, medical and surgical specialties, and research, clinical and teaching relationships with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The School of Medicine Office of Research, co-led by the Vice Dean for Basic Science Research and the Vice Dean for Clinical Research, oversees all basic science, clinical and translational research activities in the School of Medicine.

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Senior Assistant Dean of Administration with a dotted line to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Assistant Dean of Research and Chief of Staff will have organizational oversight of the School of Medicine’s clinical and basic science research enterprise to help achieve distinction in all facets of research, including clinical trials. The Assistant Dean and Chief of Staff is expected to exercise independent judgment and decision making in the management of the school’s research operations and will be expected to plan, design and implement the overall strategic direction of research within the School of Medicine. The Assistant Dean and Chief of Staff will serve as a subject matter expert on all matters related to research contracts and grants administration. The incumbent will oversee operational management for the School of Medicine, including but not limited to: budgeting, staffing, finance, human resources, and space planning. Will represent the Dean to the University community and various stakeholders. The Assistant Dean and Chief of Staff will direct short- and long-term planning and develop policies and procedures within the School of Medicine.

Required:
  • Academic background and recognized expertise in multiple disciplines of research.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
  • Expert oral and written communication skills with a broad community of other researchers and scientists, industrial partners, program managers, funding agencies, media, and center managers.
  • Management experience in academic, research, and / or government agencies.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs or research agenda.
  • Demonstrated cutting-edge research capabilities.
  • Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards. Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals which measure effectiveness of contributions to efficient operations of department.
  • Strong knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Advanced project management skills, including the capability to manage capital projects.
  • Uses expert level negotiation skills to work collaboratively with internal and external, diverse constituencies.
  • Advanced skills in strategy development, systems planning and change management.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
    • 5+ years of leadership experience in an academic research environment.
