About the Business
Our Safer Family Services team delivers a range of services, including intensive family support and multi-agency responses, to help children stay safely at home with their families and avoid the need for out-of-home care. They also help families with parenting support, workshops and connection to community events and initiatives to improve child safety and wellbeing.
Role Details
Safe Start is a program that provides coordinated, targeted and culturally appropriate earlier intervention for infants 0-24 months and their families to improve their safety, health, development and education outcomes where risk factors exist.
Safe Start delivers an improved collaborative and coordinated response of services and programs to meet the needs of families whose children are at risk.
The Aboriginal Family Clinician is responsible to the Supervisor for provision of a range of interventions for vulnerable Aboriginal parents.
The Aboriginal Family Clinician works collaboratively with health professionals to provide case management to assist families form relationships with service providers that will assist them achieve their personal goals.
The role contributes to the development and implementation of a service of best practice delivering an effective and efficient client focused service that meets the needs of Aboriginal clients.
The role also contributes to the maintenance of data and record management to improve service delivery, develops skills and expertise in a specialised area and supports and actively participates in a positive culture and safe work environment.
Key outcomes and accountabilities:
1. Work in partnership with the Safe Start team to provide a range of support services for eligible women and their families in the antenatal period, who are experiencing high and complex needs.
2. Provide advice and guidance to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff in the comprehensive assessment of families’ strengths and risks/needs on an ongoing basis and ensure Aboriginal families are referred to a range of general and specialist health and community services including providing liaison, advocacy and coordination with services on behalf of families to ensure the vulnerable family’s needs are met.
3. Maintain a level of contact with Aboriginal families and provide practical, culturally responsive support when required through actively engaging families to build rapport and provide practical support when required.
4. Work with families under limited supervision utilising a range of 1:1 support including home visiting and goals are developed in partnership with families engaged in the program - participate in case conferences, discussions and regular case reviews for Aboriginal families with complex needs to promote the needs of vulnerable families and ensure the “voice of the unborn infant/infant” is heard.
5. Provide guidance and mentoring of less experienced Aboriginal staff as well as providing a level of professional consultation to non-Aboriginal staff members in relation to working with Aboriginal families.
6. Contribute to increased access to health and community services for Aboriginal families by ensuring families are assisted to transition into appropriate community support groups/networks in the Aboriginal community.
7. Maintain high quality case notes and recording and participate in regular case reviews and file audits; and manage client files and documentation in accordance with the Department’s guidelines, policies and practices and the State Records Act 1997.
Note: Any other responsibilities in line with the classification level of the role as assigned by Line Manager and/or the Department. The responsibilities as specified above may be altered in accordance with the changing requirements of the role.
Special Conditions

Some out of hours work may be required.
Must hold a current Australian issued driver’s licence (equivalent to minimum class C).
Covid -19 – will be required to have had two COVID-19 vaccinations prior to engagement with DHS, unless it would be medically unsafe for the employee to do so, or they’re currently employed in the SA public sector and are not required to be vaccinated.
Role Status: Term up to 05/09/2025 (Multiple roles available)
Salary Range: $88,255-$102,240 (AHP2)
