Reporting directly to the Senior Registrar, Loans and Exhibitions, the Registrar, Touring Exhibitions oversees the documentation, logistics, installation and general risk management of works included in M+’s Exhibition and Touring Exhibition programmes. This includes incoming loans, M+ collections, Commissions and other non-collection material. Internally this position works closely with Registration, Conservation, Installation and Displays and Exhibition Management teams, and externally with private and institutional lenders, insurers, fine art logistic agents, artists and exhibition venues. In addition, there is the responsibility to regularly travel to international Tour Venues to oversee shipping, installation, condition checking, packing and art handling and co-ordinate travel and touring schedules in consultation with Tour Venues.
You will be responsible for:
  • Planning, budgeting and scheduling artwork logistics for M+ exhibitions, including but not limited to museum standard packing, handling, transportation, customs and insurance coverage, whilst ensure exhibition budgets and strict deadlines are met;
  • Reviewing key documents such as facility reports, contracts and insurance coverage and liaise in a professional manner with tour venues, lenders, shipping agents, insurers, and other related stakeholders, ensuring a high level of risk management is applied to objects throughout loan periods;
  • Preparing and maintaining a tour manual, including crate lists, packing and installation instructions, condition reports and floorplans; providing stakeholders with clear timelines, resources and equipment that allow venues to safely install works;
  • Travelling to a range of international exhibition venues across China, South East Asia, Europe and beyond representing the interests of the museum while promoting close collaboration with Tour partners; overseeing the object installation, packing, condition checking, art handling and maintenance procedures both at M+ and external venues, ensuring lender’s conditions are met;
  • Working with the Senior Manager, Collection Database to create and implement data standardisations for the documentation, tracking and reporting of exhibitions within TMS and in accordance with museum cataloguing standards;
  • Coordinating other M+ staff accompanying the tour and making arrangements for museum couriers such as transit, accommodation, per diems and installation schedules where required to meet contractual obligations and internal procedures; and
  • Guiding, mentoring and performance managing junior registration staff or M+ interns, who support the team on the delivery of M+ exhibitions and loans.
You should:
  • possess a recognised university degree in Art History, Visual/Fine Art, Museum Studies or other relevant disciplines;
  • have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a museum or cultural organisation, preferably within an exhibition or registration function;
  • have demonstrable experience coordinating packing and transportation of cultural material with local and international logistics service providers;
  • have excellent project management skills, including cost-effective control of projects, ensuring best practice at all times;
  • have a high degree of computer literacy skills using collection management systems and MS Office;
  • possess strong organisation and planning skills, analytical and problem-solving skills with result-oriented mindset;
  • possess excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Proficiency in Chinese is preferred; and
  • be willing to travel locally and internationally, including weekends.
