About The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the Position
Under direction, this position manages the Australian Embassy’s Business Engagement and Public Diplomacy program through the design, planning and delivery of high quality and innovating public diplomacy activities and events. This position leads event management in the Embassy, manages the Embassy’s website and social media profile to promote Australia through public outreach and media engagement. The position closely monitors economic and business developments in the Netherlands as they relate to Australia’s interests and contributes to timely and clear policy advice and reports.
Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Manage the Embassy’s economic and public diplomacy engagement, including the design, planning and delivery of high quality and innovative public diplomacy activities and events.
- Monitor, report and provide high level research and analysis on economic and business developments in the Netherlands as they relate to Australia’s interests.
- Contribute to the development of the Embassy’s economic and public diplomacy and media engagement strategies and manage the public diplomacy budget.
- Manage the organisation of events, receptions and commemorations.
- Manage the Embassy’s website and social media profile including content creation across a variety of digital platforms and identifying opportunities to drive engagement.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with a broad network of contacts across government, business, academia, media, think tanks and the arts and cultural sectors.
- Support visiting officials by assisting with event planning, program development and the organisation and facilitation of official visits to the Netherlands.
- Manage enquiries from internal and external stakeholders on public diplomacy and business matters in a timely manner.
- Provide administrative support to the Policy and Corporate Services teams and Corporate & Consular Services Manager as required.
- Assist with other duties as required, including providing backup policy support to the Policy team.
- Prior experience in media and communications, including an ability to draft high-quality and innovative digital content and improve engagement across multiple social media platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to manage events, work independently and flexibly and undertake multiple diverse tasks in a team environment, strong judgment and problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative.
- Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work with a diverse range of people including government officials, business, academia, media, think tanks and the arts and cultural sectors.
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, including the ability to deliver high-quality and timely reporting on policy developments.
- Demonstrated initiative, adaptability and the ability to work cooperatively in a small team and build productive working relationships.
- Fluency in written and spoken Dutch is desirable.
Selection Criteria
In your written statements, you must include relevant high-level examples from your experience that support your claims against the role. The word limit is strictly 250 words per response. The panel will not assess responses which exceed the word limit.
A. Demonstrated experience in media and communications with the ability to create high-quality and innovative digital content that is engaging across multiple social media platforms.
B. Well developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders including government officials, business, academia, media, think tanks and the arts and cultural sectors.
C. Well-developed planning and organisational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a client-focused environment to achieve positive outcomes.
D. Proven ability to conduct comprehensive and high-quality research, analyse and present the findings to a diverse range of stakeholders.
E. Ability to work autonomously with strong initiative and willingness to add value to a team by getting involved at all levels and in all areas, contributing to a friendly and collegiate environment.
