The Economic Capability team support the Treasury in building the economic capability it needs to play its role. We do this in a range of ways, including providing surge analysis and support on specific projects, with a current focus on the three stewardship reports that the Treasury will release in 2025: Strategies, plans and stewardship reports | The Treasury New Zealand. We also lead the development and implementation of the Living Standards Framework, manage the Treasury's academic connections programme, and provide economic training and other capability initiatives.
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
We are looking for someone with a passion for economics in policy to join the team as a Senior Analyst.
You will have diverse and rewarding opportunities to:
- Contribute to the development of a cross-cutting narrative across the Treasury's Long-Term Insights Briefing, Long-Term Fiscal Statement and Investment Statement, which will all be released during 2025. This will include making key messages accessible to support wider public debate about the path to sustainable and resilience fiscal policy, which supports New Zealander's living standards.
- Lead the forward agenda for the Treasury Guest Lecture series and other initiatives to strengthen the Treasury's academic connections. This includes opportunities to understand policy priorities across the Treasury and to liaise with prominent international economists and other experts.
- Play a leadership role in developing and delivering training and other capability-building materials in public economics and the Living Standards Framework.
- Use your economics to provide evidence-driven insights to inform the Treasury's policy advice and public debate. This would include developing analysis and reports using the Treasury's Living Standards Framework Dashboard to support a broader understanding of progress in New Zealand across economic, social, and environmental indicators.
Ō pūmanawa | About You
You will have at least five years of experience working on policy analysis and advice. Your analytical skills are complemented by your ability to work well with others and to communicate complex ideas in a simple and engaging way. You will be intellectually curious and test existing thinking through constructive debate.
We would prefer candidates with a strong background as a practising economist. Experience in quantitative analysis to inform policy development, would also be an advantage.
