To strengthen our operations and legal compliance, we are seeking a dynamic and versatile Corporate Counsel and HR Manager to provide legal guidance and oversee our human resource strategies.
Job Summary
The Corporate Counsel and HR Manager will play a critical dual role, serving as the company’s legal advisor while leading HR operations. You will ensure compliance with legal regulations, manage employee relations, and develop strategies to attract, retain, and motivate top talent. This role requires someone who is detail-oriented, highly organized, and skilled in balancing legal expertise with HR responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities Corporate Counsel Responsibilities
- Legal Compliance
- Ensure the company complies with local, state, and federal laws, including labor laws, intellectual property, contract law, and other regulatory requirements.
- Monitor changes in laws and regulations, advising leadership on necessary adjustments to policies or practices.
- Handle legal filings, registrations, and renewals for the company.
- Contracts and Agreements
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, including employment agreements, client contracts, vendor agreements, and partnership documents.
- Provide legal advice and risk assessments on proposed agreements and projects.
- Dispute Resolution
- Represent the company in legal proceedings, mediation, or arbitration.
- Manage external legal counsel relationships when necessary.
- Intellectual Property (IP)
- Oversee the protection of the company’s intellectual property, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents.
- Advise on IP rights in client or third-party collaborations.
- Recruitment and Onboarding
- Develop recruitment strategies to attract top talent, including writing job descriptions, screening candidates, and coordinating interviews.
- Oversee the onboarding process, ensuring a seamless integration for new employees into the company culture.
- Employee Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee concerns, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
- Mediate and resolve conflicts, ensuring fair outcomes aligned with company policies.
- Policy Development and Implementation
- Develop, implement, and enforce HR policies and procedures in line with best practices and legal requirements.
- Update the employee handbook and internal policies to reflect current laws and company practices.
- Performance Management and Development
- Lead the performance appraisal process, setting clear KPIs and providing constructive feedback.
- Design and execute employee training and professional development programs.
- Compensation and Benefits
- Manage payroll, employee benefits, and incentive programs.
- Conduct market research to ensure the company remains competitive in salary and benefits offerings.
- HR Compliance
- Maintain accurate employee records in compliance with labor laws and data protection regulations.
- Ensure workplace safety, conducting regular audits and implementing necessary training.
- Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) with a license to practice (BL) in Nigeria.
- A degree or certification in Human Resource Management or related field is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a dual legal and HR role or similar positions.
- Proven track record in legal advisory, contract management, and HR leadership.
- Strong knowledge of Nigerian labor laws, corporate governance, intellectual property law, and contract management.
- Ability to draft and review legal documents with precision.
- Familiarity with HR software and tools for employee management and payroll.
- Experience in developing and implementing HR policies and procedures.
- Strong understanding of talent acquisition, employee engagement, and performance management.
- Exceptional communication and negotiation skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- High ethical standards and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail.
