Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a small multi-disciplinary team of scientists and clinicians within the Environmental Medicine and Sciences Division at the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM). Our mission is summarised as: a Centre of Excellence bringing together scientists and medical professionals to improve the health of the UK Armed Forces. Our aim is to excel in achieving that mission and to maintain and enhance our standing as a world class centre in occupational health, particularly in problems associated with work and operations in maritime and climatically hostile environments.
The Environmental Medicine and Sciences Division (EMS) achieves the above through assurance in the form of independent assessments, analyses, advice, and training from scientific and medical Subject Matter Experts. This may sometimes require health surveillance, audits, or small research projects. Our role is to assure the Royal Navy of its legal compliance and responsibilities, i.e. its Duty of Care. We support the occupational health and safety of the Royal Navy, to maintain the health and well-being of personnel.
At the Institute of Naval Medicine, we offer an impressive range of on-site facilities including a gymnasium, volleyball court, gardens, plenty of car parking spaces, a canteen with indoor and outdoor seating, and ‘mess’ facilities - in which military and civilian staff can socialise and eat. The Institute is in the seaside settlement of Alverstoke, a short walk from award-winning Georgian era gardens and a shingle beach with views of the Isle of Wight. There are nature reserves nearby and the cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester can be reached within 30 to 45 minutes by car.
As a civil servant in Navy Command, you will be part of a forward-looking organisation with inclusive workplace policies, excellent career prospects, and a job that makes a difference.
Navy Command prides itself on being a supportive employer and where possible encourages flexible working, helping you to maintain a great work-life balance. In Navy Command we believe that everyone has the potential to make a difference and you will be supported to help you learn and advance in your career. Successful candidates can discuss their development options with their manager when in post.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The post holder will be expected to field queries and provide advice to RN and Mo D customers, with the support of the wider team for specialist areas of expertise. Formal training will be provided where applicable. The successful candidate will be expected to collate and analyse data, provide critical scrutiny of data and reports, summarise data through the creation of 'dashboards' and present data in a concise and informative way.
Depending on the needs of the task, the post holder will at times work independently and at other times collaboratively with team members or colleagues in other departments. The post holder will be required to engage with customers and stakeholders at all levels, including senior military and civilian personnel. The post requires occasional travel within the UK and sometimes overseas, each of which may include overnight stays on land and possibly at sea.
In Navy Command, our civil servants work alongside their military colleagues in jobs that matter; jobs which often have a direct impact on the quality of the operational capabilities we deliver. Roles can offer great job satisfaction and there are many opportunities to develop and progress both within the Department and across the wider Civil Service. Navy Command provides an open, flexible, and inclusive work environment where civil servants and Armed Forces personnel work together in a wealth of interesting and challenging jobs in areas ranging from: finance; legal services; personnel and HR; project planning and managing contracts, to media and communications.
