Teacher Special Education - Hunter River High School

Position Information
Hunter River High School is a comprehensive secondary school with a student enrolment of approximately 800 students. Our school community has 20% of students who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. Our school is located on Worimi land, close to the Hunter River at Heatherbrae, south of Raymond Terrace.

Mentoring, positive attendance strategies and restorative practice underpin student wellbeing.
In 2025 the school will have 13 support classes with the addition of an Emotional Disturbance class.
The school enjoys the support of its Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community and has fostered strong partnerships with the AECG, universities, cultural institutions, businesses and community groups. Students represent the school across the region in the performing arts and a wide range of sporting activities, with both state and regional representation.

Selection Criteria
Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with Emotional Disturbance, Behaviour Difficulties, and Autism as well as other complex mental health needs.
Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate flexible and innovative teaching, learning, and transition programs and assessment with a focus on adjusting the curriculum for students with special needs, through the development of individual education plans within a multidisciplinary team to engage students in their learning and support their behaviour needs.
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to work as part of a collaborative team, building positive and trusting relationships with students, parents, staff, external agencies, and the wider school community, whilst contributing to the success of whole school programs.
Ability to implement engaging and effective teaching strategies that cater for and enhance the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and students from low socio-economic status communities.


Conditions
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
