Job summary
A unique, challenging but very rewarding post available in the Army Personnel Services Group (APSG), Personnel Services Branch, Bereavement and Aftercare Support Team. You will form part of a small team who exist to provide an enduring focus for bereaved families and to sustain a robust relationship between the Army and the relatives of those who die in service.
The team is the conduit for the timely passage of information on investigations and inquiries for fatalities and serious injuries undertaken by the Military. The team are the Notifying Authority for the whole of the UK and NI and lead all aspects of Army deaths worldwide. Due to the personal and sensitive nature of the information that we receive and hold, you will need to be both mentally resilient and discrete.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
The Team as a whole, maintain a robust and enduring relationship between the Army and the relatives of those who die in Service.
We are the Notifying Authority for whole of the UK and NI for all Army deaths and serious injury/illness. Casualty notification is a pivotal, non-discretionary, no fail function that requires steadiness and attention to detail.
Alongside the established EO, you will liaise with the relevant Regional Points of Command (RPOC) in the notification and appointment of Casualty Notifying Officers (CNO’s) and Visiting Officers (VO’s) in order to support bereaved families and families of ill/injured and missing soldiers. Initiating and maintaining a good rapport with VO’s is essential, identifying and promptly responding to issues raised on their reports ensures continuous support to both them and the families they are caring for. Interrogate Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) to obtain accurate details to enable you draft Letters of Condolence for Senior Military Officers.
On a rotational basis, you will be required to hold the Duty Casualty phone in order to provide advice on notification and casualty reporting to the Andover Duty Officer during silent hours and stand-down periods.
In support of our bereaved families, you will form close links with the Joint Casualty & Compassionate Cell (JCCC) other Government Departments and Charities both internal and external. Maintain close links with the Defence Inquest Unit regarding inquests dates to ensure families are fully supported throughout the process, attending as and when required. Assist with the organisation and family attendance at Service Inquiry (SI) briefings by liaising with the Defence Safety Authority (DSA) and Presidents of APSG Service Inquiries (SI).
Main responsibilities will include -
  • Initiate contact with the VO, provide BAS information packs to assist and guide both the VO and the family.
  • Scrutinise VO reports, identifying and promptly responding to issues raised.
  • Interrogate Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) to obtain accurate details to enable you to draft Letters of Condolence for Senior Military Officers.
  • Liaise closely with other Government Departments and Charities, both internal and external e.g JCCC, RPOC’s, Army Secretariat, DIU, Army Widows Association (AWA), Regimental Headquarters (RHQ’s).
  • Maintain close liaison with DIU, VO’s and families regarding Coroner Inquest and attend as and when required.
  • Assist with the organisation and co-ordination of family attendance at SI briefings.
  • Provide feedback information on casework and notification issues when required to inform the lessons process and improve working practices

    Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.
