Job summary
LWC is closely linked with the rest of defence; and uses experimentation and lessons to optimise the Army and lead on the development of future capabilities. In the same way that operational capabilities must be continually developed to be more effective and efficient, our training capabilities for the Future Soldier.
Warminster Garrison is part of the LWC and is responsible for the oversight of all Barracks within the Garrison footprint and is home to 3 major units, Royal Dragoon Guards, and 2 RYORKS in Battlesbury Barracks and Falcon Squadron in Harman Lines.
As the Security Operations Officer you will be responsible for the physical and personal security of Warminster Garrison, reporting directly to the Head of Establishment. The role oversees all Unit Security Officers and is the Garrison Subject Matter Expert.
This is an exciting pivotal role which involves close work with Defence Intelligence, Service and Civil Police, plus the other emergency services. On a day-to-day basis this includes liaison with the guarding force (both Military and Civilian), as well as the contractors, who assist with personnel and car passes.
You will be representing the Garrison at internal and external meetings and will routinely be required to take the initiative and make decisions on the best course of action for security matters.
The Security Operations Officer will support all Information Technology (IT) infrastructure, engineer visits, IT roll outs and IT support to the Garrison Barracks where needed, this will require close collaboration with external contractors and Defence Digital.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week
Job description
- Obtain, assess, and disseminate as appropriate intelligence gathered from the Ministry of Defence, Civil Police and other internal and external organisations
- Implement security planning for the Garrison, to include Counter Terrorism, Anti-terrorist security measures, oversight of personnel security in particularly vetting and travel
- The physical security of barracks, armouries and ammunition compounds.
- Lead on document and equipment security
- Lead on visits and to provide briefings to units and personnel on Security
- Oversight of Garrison vetting and pass issue and act as the sponsor for the National Vetting Service
- Conduct the yearly assurance assessments and inspections
- Escalate security incidents when required
- Be the focal point of contact for all issues relating to Military Aid to the Civil Authority
- Overarching IT Officer for the Garrison
- Assume the establishment security officer for Waterloo Lines and units as required
- Control access to the relevant IT infrastructure
- Keep unit orders up to date
Person specification
You should have excellent organisation skills, and an inquisitive mind to establish detail and facts at pace.
Ideally you will have the skills to connect and communicate with staff at all levels, building strong working relationships and understanding boundaries with contracts is key.
You should be prepared to represent the Head of Establishment at routine meetings with supporting partners and champion collaborative working to achieve results.
You will support the Commanding Officer with all Security and IT issues and therefore you will need to be able to adapt, challenge, and make decisions at short notice. You will need to be analytical and gather and act on intelligence as you receive it.
It would be desirable that you would have previous security experience working with in a large organisation and that you hold a UK driving licence as you will be required to visit other MOD sites.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
